Nothing fancy about the 88, it's my "truck gun". Inexpensive, shoots good enough to lay down the geese, phesants, and turkey. Not the first choice in my arsenal but will do the job.
It depends on how hard you plan on using it, I know one guy that has one, but he hunts very little and has used it for years. But remember the Maverick is the bottom of the Mossberg line. From what I saw of his you can see were Mossberg cut corners to keep the price down. If trying too save a couple bucks I would check out a used 500. Not the smoothest shot gun but almost indistructable.
I bought a maverick in 2000 and since then ive put probably a case case and a half of 00buck through it with no problems. I bought the 18.5 inch barrel
I got one in 20Ga. three years ago, i use if for small game and it's a nice beater gun. I also shoot clays with it some times, it hasn't had a problem yet. The only thing I don't like is the safety position and how stiff it is after 3 years.
By the way I own three 500's and the only difference I feel is the looks, and if you keep looking for a used you'll find a nice one at the same price as a new 88.
