Muzzleloader Questions

Hey guys,

I'm new to muzzleloaders and was curious about something. Is flintlock season considered to be muzzleloader or do you have to get the old school "musket" type muzzeloaders. The kind where you pull the hammer back and it ignites the gunpowder for the gun to go off. I'm asking because I have been having a pretty rotten buck season so far, so I want to take every chance I can to get a deer. So basically, what I wanted to know is, during flintlock season on December 26th to January 16th, are you allowed to use a muzzleloader to hunt, or do you have to purchase a specified flintlock rifle? Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Re: Muzzleloader Questions

You will need a flintlock, the hammer type with a piece of flint in it, or as I learned from one of the forums here (and now a favorite of mine) a "rock smasher"!!!

Good luck!

in 2b you could use any type of muzzleloader, slug gun, or rifle in westmoreland county to harvest a doe, with each anterless tag. Now to harvest a antlered deer you would have to use a flintlock.

Re: Muzzleloader Questions

You have to get a flintlock rifle to hunt...TC made some nice ones..In your situation for hunting you should get a used TC Hawken Flintlock or TC Renegade Flintlock..The caliber where you have the best bullet selection would be 50 caliber..The PGC allows copper or lead bullets to be used in the Flintlock season...Your best bet and cheapest route would be call a bunch of your local gun shops seeking a used Flintlock rifle where you can go down and pick it up and someone there can show you what accessories you will need to buy to shoot it..

Re: Muzzleloader Questions

I hunt in 2A though, do those rules apply there also? Plus I have honestly just started picking hunting back up again, haven't been hunting since '05. So I'm quite a bit rusty, been trying state game lands 296 on 2A (I believe its SGL 296, its literally right below Smithton) , but haven't seen anything. Any suggestions on where to go if I could, by chance borrow a muzzleloader from someone or purchase a decently priced one? (My funds a bit low as I still have to get Christmas gifts for everyone)Just trying to bag something for this year, I got 2 doe tags for 2A and was hoping to get them filled, at least one of them anyways. But I will call a place down here in Elizabeth, its call Swiss Guns, or something along those lines. I will give them a call and see what they have. If you guys have any other suggestions for a rookie hunter, please feel free to give me some hints.

Thanks again for replying guys. https://www.huntingpa.com/forums/i...ilies/grin.gif

Re: Muzzleloader Questions

Your looking at probably 500 bucks for gun and accessories to hunt this year..If you do not have the funds then wait til next year..Keep an eye on your local papers this summer and you could get a used Thompson Center flintlock for around 150-200 dollars..

You should be able to find a decent used starter rifle for under 250 and make most all of the accessories you need. Part of the fun of this sport is making your own stuff.

I can get a muzzleloader stamp, I unfortunately did not get anything this year, not even a doe. So I might take you up on your offer bud. I would really appreciate it and would like to learn how to shoot flintlock.
