No.11 percussion caps
Can you use pyrodex or triple 7 powders with the number 11 percussion caps??? Will the caps ignite these powders????

I use no. 11 caps and pyrodex RS in my T/C White Mt. Carbine .54 cal. It works fine. Can't say about the 777 as I have never used it.

#11 caps will light up any powder on the market today. If you decide you want an extra amount of fire to torch it off, CCI#11 Magnum caps might be attractive to you. :smile2:

Your other options, (requiring a new nipple or special arrangement) would be musket caps, or a modern shotgun #209 primer. For my money, the #11 cap, or the Magnum version will work just fine, and wrapping a strip of plastic wrap around the gun over the cap will do a good job of insuring a downpour wont stop it from going bang.:wink2:

In a few rifles, the flash channel that the fire must negotiate to get to the powder make it difficult. Take for instance a common CVA percussion. The fire is directed down through a constricted nipple, then must make a 90 degree angle and travel another half inch to where the powder is located. In a Thompson center, the fire goes down through a nipple into the breech plug and then makes an angle and must travel another 5/32nds long tunnel to get to the main charge power.

In an underhammer, the fire goes through the nipple and directly into the powder charge.

In an inline with percussion, the fire goes through the constricted channel in the nipple, but like the underhammer. goes then directly into the main charge powder.

So sometimes with more traditional configured percussion breech configurations no 11 caps do seem to have more difficulty igniting the fake powders. Often it is just a matter of keeping the flash channel open and clean.
