I've stretched them, worked any fat off them, then salted the crap out of them before and it worked just fine. after a few weeks i cleaned the salt off, applied new and let it sit again. Don't remember exactly how long but i still have them and use them for fly tying.
Another suggestion - clean the hides thoroughly using a warm mixture of water and Dawn detergent. After rinsing, let dry completely. Then cut off all fur and put in a coffee grinder to mix fur into spiky dubbing. Put into zip lock bags until needed.
if you tan it you can cut zonker strips of them. Great for making leach,streamer and "worm" patterns
