Re: best sonnar imaging
thanks Ritz. looks good, but I really don't need a charting GPS. My home lake is Chautauqua lake and no one has hydro/gps charts fo it.

I was thinking of a stand alone Imaging unit...100+yards on either side of my boat for finding schools of gizzard shad.
Might have to get the gps to get the best imaging system.

Been using humminbird for about40 years (little green flasher model). Great products. They use to have good service, but in the last 10 years they got bad.

ok here is the top of the line no charting version

Re: best sonnar imaging
thanks Riz. Seems it cost more to get without charting? But the 998 looks to be super.

It draws 1000 watts RMS, that is about 85 amps out of my 12 volt system. I run two batteries, just to keep on for safety when running all night long with the depth finder on and the kicker outboard trolling. But my alternator can't deliver that much steady state. Wonder how people keep these powered? I guess I coould run it for 20 minutes to find fish, then power off and use my normal Humminbird?

Re: best sonnar imaging
I have the 798 and I keep getting a low voltage warning when I'm running the SI for awhile. I never thought to ask how much voltage it draws.

I never had the problem with the regular sonar.

Re: best sonnar imaging
My Hunninbird draws about 15 amps. but the 798 draws close to 35 amps.

My voltage drops also. I usually troll for 6-8 hours at night. with running lights and depth finder (600 series) on it is a real drain and my low voltage alarm goes on, and I have to run the big engine to get the battery charged back up. Learned the hard way, coming home in dark with only the kicker motor.

what do you think of the 798? is that the unit you would buy today IF you were to repurchase?

I've had it since March. I like it but I'm still learning how to use it. Sometimes I just sit in the boat, put on the simulator and tinker.

I was looking at the Lowrance but a lot of guys on other forums were having problems with Lowrance CS and there was a problem with the smaller Lowrance SI units.

After a lot of research and reading reviews I went with the HB. I think it was the right choice. I may have bought the next larger model but cost was a factor. As it worked out I have no trouble with the size of the display but I would consider the bigger unit if I had the $ which was almost double what I paid.

BTW it does work!

On starting the thread, I was intent on buying another gun, as my reward. But the Huminbird is sounding better that the 375 mag.
thanks for the info Dogface.

Re: best sonnar imaging
It is better (maybe ?) but I get to use it more often.

The more I play with it the more structure and fish I find.

If I have one dislike with the HB it is the built in map. It does not have the detail for the lake I fish most. It is accurate for bigger water.

If you have any questions let me know and if I can answer them I will.

BTW I purchased mine off Amazon. One site was a lot cheaper than everyone else. His price went up about $40.00 right after I purchased mine. Shop around there are some deals out there.
