I hope this is the correct board to ask this. I am considering hunting deer this fall in North Carolina. Has anyone ever hunted there? Im looking for an outfitter................. I just thought it would be an easy hunt for my 79 yr old dad, we can drive there, bring meat back, etc. If not, ill go to Utah again for Mule Deer

I hunt there every year but with friends and their club. I would guess that most of the outfitter services are located in the central and west parts of the state. Never heard of any along the coast where I hunt. If you do go, only bring back quartered or fully butchered meat. Don't know about NC and VA, but you can't go through MD with any part of the deer's brain or spinal parts due to the CWD issue

Spirit Bear, I lived in Rockingham County north of greensboro and that area has alot of good bucks, I hunted some land of some farmers that i went to church with. There is a small game land in Caswell County by Yanceyville that i killed a few turkeys, but never hunted deer there. Also look at the Uwharrie National Forest. There are more deer in the east and dogs are allowed in most eastern counties. The western mountains are steep with less deer, but they do have some good moonshine.

I have hunted 5 years now with Roanoke Tar Guide Service in NC. Decent hunting, good food, decent pricing, honest outfitter. Jeff Wolgemuth (outfitter) is always at Harrisburg for the show. If you book with him, please tell him Tom DeAngelo sent you.

There are a lot of good outfitters in the state, and we have very liberal bag limits. I hunt on private property owned by some friends, but I have hunted game lands for years before that. Your license gives you 6 deer tags and depending on the part of the state you are in it is either 2 or 4 bucks with the rest does. If you run out of doe tags (at least as a resident) you can go to WalMart and by 2 more over the counter for $5. You can do that as many times as you like.

I have never hunted Conman's place listed above, but he is a member over at www.nchuntandfish.com and is very well respected. Heard LOTS of good stuff about his operation, especially his bear hunts. They kill some big boys!

I live and hunt in eastern NC. The bulk of the outfitters are in NE NC not far off the i95 corridor. I have not hunted with any of them but make sure you get good references. There are a lot of deer, it's big agricultural country with flat fields of soybeans, corn, and cotton and very thick bottomland. You'll likely watch fields or food plots from box blinds or ladder stands.

In eastern nc muzzleloader starts around the 1st week of Oct and gun starts around mid-Oct. you can shoot buck or doe once the season starts with either weapon. I would recommend either going those first weeks (of muzzleloader or rifle) or waiting until the 2nd week of November through thanksgiving to hunt the rut (it's not much different rut timing than PA). Mid to late October after opening day can get slow until you get to the rut.

Good luck.

Spirit Bear,

I think you'll love southern style hunting, it's different but it's a hoot. Be sure to post a little review in the outfitters and guides forum when you get back and share your experience with all of us.
