ok so this year i caught my first big coon in a cable, i want to tan the hide and attempt at coon skin cap. also after many years of messing around with calling varmits. i called in a beutiful male grey fax, i skined it out for a soft tan, claws and all. does anyone on here tan their own hides? and if so what are your recipes? i've seen the online tanning kits. but i'm sure there is a cheeper easier, more traditional way that works equally as well. thanks for your help.
Honestly, the easiest, and cheapest way is to send it off to a tannery such as Moyle's, or USA Foxx.........you get a real good soft tan that way, and it is pretty cheap.....around 112-14 dollars for a raccoon I think, and 20 or so for a fox
DOES ANYONE RECOMMEND ONE TANNERY FROM THE OTHER? ALSO for the fox do need to do anything special with the ears? right now they stick up, do need to remove the cartlige, and if so any advice on the best way to do it? thanks. also when doing this do i need to sew any holes or do i do that once i get hte hide back?
The ears need to be turned all the way to the tips. The skin needs to be rough fleshed and least and then it needs to be salted thoroughly. Don't repair any holes or tears till after it comes back from the tannery.
TALKED TO USAFOXX & FUR. THEY REPAIR HOLES AT NO CHARGE AFTER HIDE IS DONE. SAID EARS CAR HAVE CARTLAGE REMOVED OR LEFT IN. BUT SHOULD BE TURNED. I WILL REMOVE IT. THEY SAID IT WILL BE A BETTER TAN.
