I challenge all hunters to harvest one squirrel of each species native to Pennsylvania. 1 Gray Squirrel 2 Fox Squirrel 3 Red Squirrel (aka Pine Squirrel).
The Black Squirrel is a color phase of the Gray Squirrel, so for the sake of this competition, both Gray and Black will be counted as one species category.
Please post pictures of your harvest with your weapon of choice. Good luck!
Henry .22LR Carbine with 1 Gray and 2 red Squirrels taken this Fall at State Game Land 191 in Erie County.
I think he was just naming the species. I am also looking for a red not running at Mach speed.
I saw a bunch of fox squirrels the size of cats this deer season.
I need to find a fox squirrel to complete the list. I live in Erie County and I see them all the time in town and around houses. Where can they be found within 1 hour of Erie on Public Land like Game Lands or a State Park?
I recently put a compact 4x32 scope on the Henry Carbine mounted with modified see-through rings. It is mounted high enough to use the iron sights with the front hood. It is also out of the way of your thumb when using the hammer. I like to use the open sights for plinking silhouette targets at the gun club. The Henry is deadly on chickens and pigs. The scope is also deadly on red squirrels.
I have taken a few hundred squirrels over about 57+ years and in a few states. I still enjoy squirrel hunting and love the early season some of the mid west states have when the leaves are on, they are on hickory tress by the numbers and nothing else is in season.
I hunt them with a BL 22 Browning and a 4 power Bushnell scope shooting LR solid points. I like the slow quite rounds...subsonic and target rounds they don't scare the other squirrels into running.
I shot a couple of black squirrels in PA years ago and showing them off as I had never seen a black squirrel before at that time. The "Locals" were looking at them, but didn't share my enthusiasm until they saw a Fox squirrel I had and they thought it was very unusual.
The ones in Erie County are big enough to eat in a stew. When I was younger, I would never shoot at a Red Squirrel because they were so small compared to the Grays we shot in Venango County.
Red Squirrells?
As many tails as I can get,I have more than enough of the others.
