Im looking at colleges one of my top 2 choices is Bucknell...but i wnat to know what kind of bird hunting is in the area before i make a decision on where im going (dont want to spend 4 years in an area with no bird hunting). not asking for you own covert locations, just an idea of if there is huntable birds (grouse, woodcock, pheasants) in the area..thanks

Good pheasant hunting right up rt 15 at gamelands #252. Also not far from the Central Susquehanna Wild Pheasant area which should reopen during your 4 year stint. Grouse and woodcock can also be had in the area.

I'm not saying where but I will say that you're within an hour of some of my co-op pheasant hunting hotspots. I'll take those farms to my grave with me but it goes to show you that there are farms in that area that still get birds from the PGC and it has not totally stopped. Thats a good area to hunt other game as well if you just knock on some doors.

well at least its good to hear theres pheasants around at least. looking more for grouse and woodcock but pheasants are better than nothing. thanks guys
LOL! Good point there.

In the absence of real birds, pheasants will do.

After you cut your teeth on grouse and woodcock then you can move up to the king of gamebirds. As you can see, some on here are still working on it

you have all of bald eagle state forest at your finger tip for grouse. and there is a couple of game lands for tame chickens with in twenty minutes
I'll second that. I hunt bald eagle for grouse. It would be much better if I had an actual hunting dog instead of a dog that just blunders around the woods. I've lived here my whole lfe, and I don't think I've been able to hunt more than say a third of the area. It's HUGE. Not many POSTED signs to be seen in any direction.

From Lewisburg you can be in bald eagle in about 20 minutes or less. SGL 252 has lots of pheasants, but it helps greatly to have a dog.

There is a lot of hate being thrown around toward the pheasant in this thread which is pathetic in my mind. Why don't you guys get over yourselves and act like real sportsman and conservationists! We ALL know the real reasons why you guys don't like pheasants. You are either to lazy to really want to hunt and push cover or you know your bird dog can't handle a running rooster and that it will ruin him for when you want to go hunt grouse and woodcock.

I personally think it's a matter of prefferance. It is true that pheasants will ruin a good grouse dog. It's also true that most good pheasant pointers are less effective on grouse because of the running. The being lazy has nothing to do with it. It's just a matter of preference on which birds you like to hunt more and what you're dog is trained for. Personally I have setters I only use on grouse and woodcock and GSP's for pheasants. Each dog cam be trained for either but depending on your preference you might want to use them exclusively.

LOL! Here are some definitions of conservationist.

conservationista person who advocates the conservation of the natural resources of a country or region. — conservational, adj.
See also: Nature

supporter of environmental conservation: a supporter of or advocate for the preservation of the environment, especially the natural world

con·ser·va·tion·ist   /ˌkɒnsərˈveɪʃənɪst/ Show Spelled[kon-ser-vey-shuh-nist] Show IPA
noun
a person who advocates or promotes conservation, especially of natural resources.

Are you a conservationist of China?

I don't understand the attack or why you would go after grouse hunters and then tout the pheasant above native game. I think most grouse hunters do enjoy pheasant hunting. I know that I do. But since they cannot sustain themselves and they don't get stocked like they once did, hunting grouse makes more sense to me.

Its also laughable that you would compare walking through a flat field in knee high grass to walking up and down hills in cover so thick you can hardly move and jumping over logs. And the guy in the woods is somehow lazy. And all my grouse dogs have handled pheasants pretty well. But the one dog that I started on pheasants, could never hunt grouse. Thats just one case so its really not an extensive enough pool to draw the conclusion that all pheasant dogs have a hard time with grouse, but I just threw that out there since I think others have experienced the same.

I have to agree with you, a lot of "grouse guys" come off as being very arrogant!

Ok guys, stick to the topic and help out the OP with a spot
he can hunt in that area. Enough of the grouse /pheasant
attack posts, this is not needed and won't be tolerated!
Thanks for your cooperation.
