Tried to talk my 13yo daughter into waiting for regular season based on Saturday's forecast. She just passed her hunter safety course two weeks ago and will have none of it...suggested I put my calls in a plastic bag to keep dry!!
Anyone else going out? I don't have much experience hunting turkeys in the rain, but have heard that the birds may move toward more open areas and/or fields. Any truth to this?
I will be out with my 10 y.o. daughter. This will be her first hunt and she is super excited. We are looking to setup on a pipeline next to some hemlocks where they like to roost. If it doesn't happen there, we will be moving to the fields.
I am taking a young lady. She missed a couple times last year. I spoke to her father and told him I will do whatever she wants. Sit and wait in the truck and hope rain stops or slows. Or hunt in rain. I want her to have a good experience. I know there were a ton of birds on their property last year.
If it was just me, I'd be hunting. But I'm a little obsessed. Shame it is only a one day junior season.
My nephew and I will definitely be out on Saturday. He moved up from the 410 to the 20 gauge this year, so I am really looking forward to this hunt. We took a drive on Sunday to check out the field above where we hunt and saw 3 fanners with about 7" beards hanging together with a couple of hens, and then saw a Big Boss with at least a 10-incher when I was turning the car around to leave. Talk about whetting the appetite.
The only thing that will delay us from getting to the blind on time is lightning. We have to cross an open field to get to the blind, but we can just sit in the truck to wait it out if there is lightning.
Good luck to all the youngsters going out Saturday!
Good luck. Don't let the weather discourage you from taking part in the great opportunity we have in our youth day.
I have killed quite a few in wet weather. The birds usually don't talk as much but rest assured they are still there doing what they do every day. If it is raining, key in on fields if there are any in your area.
My son and I will be headed out in the morning. Looks like we will setup in a blind in a field. Like Strut says it makes the rain less miserable.
