My buddy got a bear a couple years ago and a WCO came out to get a liver sample and take a look at the area where it was shot. He said we were the 20th bear he checked out and it was something like 17 of the 20 had bait. I couldn't believe it. This was during the bear/deer season (first week of buck) so I don't know if the people were baing bear or baiting deer or both.

With as much as a bear kill is scrutinized, I don't know why anyone would want to shoot one unless everything was totally on the up and up. I guess some folks are not that smart.

What was the outcome of it then?

Here is the bear in the xmas tree field. He is a friend of my wife. He is a very responsible person and would never think of taking a bear or any game over bait. He is the one that just like to be out there and if he gets something in his time in the field is just a bonus for the day.

My buddy killed a bear this year.... a sow with two of last year's cubs. He was going though the thick stuff, headed back to camp, and almost stepped on her. He was that close that one of the cubs ran into him and almost knocked him over.

A few weeks ago, I had a bear walk right down the hill at me, and he wound up within three yards.

While I believe there is plenty of baiting that goes on in this state, not every close encounter is a result of it. Sometimes, that's just the way it shakes out.

Of the liver study or the search of our hunting area? I don't know about the study, but nothing came out of his search around our bear. It was in the big woods, a ways from the nearest road or house. The WCO was actually really cool and, it turns out, we had common friends. He even called to wish me a Merry Christmas after the season. :)

There was a dead coyote in a creek near the hunting area. He did ask about it. Said some guys will even use a dead coyote for bait. We found the coyote in archery and I actually took a picture of it (why? I'm weird). He did ask to see the picture with the time stamp, which I did.

It was no big deal, since we were on the up-and-up. But, I'll tell you what. If we had any tom-foolery going on, he would have nailed us. Very thorough.
