Before CWD I shot a buck in New York right on the border. When the bullet hit him he lurched, jumped over the line, and landed dead in Pennsylvania.

Wonder what I should do if that happens again. ;)

Seriously, it?s going to inconvenience lots of hunters near state borders, but it?s a good move. CWD has the potential to change everything.

Steve.

This is hilarious considering that PA. Deer farms were responsible for the first outbreak in OH.
The PGC. needs to lobby the legislature to shut down all PA. commercial deer farms instead trying to put a band aid on the problem by banning dead deer carcasses coming into PA.
Instead we need to stop exporting live deer from PA. deer farms that are infected with CWD. to other states.

It is a little late for that. The reason the dept of ag has charge of deer farms is because the PGC was holding their feet to the fire and passing regulations to prevent the movement of farm raised deer. The deer farmers went to the general assemble and got them to turn the operations over to Ag, which was like putting the foxes and weasels in charge of the chicken houses. Hunters were silent on the issue when it happened, it is a little late for them to be complaining now! If you want to blame someone, blame the general assembly, they are the ones who caused the spread of the disease.

Hence the reason I said that " the PGC. needs to lobby the legislature to ban PA. deer farms" And be very vocal publicly as well. And it wasn't just the deer farmers that went to the general assembly, they were joined by the entire PA. Farm Bureau.
The PGC. Is charged with protecting the whitetail deer, regardless of whether or not it angers the PA. Farm Bureau.

I agree 100% that hunters should be pressuring our elected officials but the PGC. should be lobbying just as much to ban commercial deer farms as the PA. Farm Bureau does to keep them open. It's the PGC's charge after all! Banning the importation of deer carcasses is like putting a band aid on tumor and a waste of time and money, meanwhile PA. deer farms just shipped another 73 CWD. positive deer out of state and let countless others escape into the wild.

Did it occur to you the reason the PGC no longer has authority over deer farming is because they were actually doing something to prevent what is not going on and protect our wildlife. They did not just turn over pen raised to the Dept of Ag, it was taken from them by the general assembly to protect the deer farms. Do you really think lobbying the same people to close deer farming down that protected deer farming by giving responsibility for them to people that will protect the deer farmers instead of our wildlife will do any good? Yeah, that will work. Perhaps if enough hunters would have voiced strong objections to giving the operations to the Dept of Ag, the operations would still be under the agency that was doing something to control the spread of the disease!

Did it ever occur to you that the majority of PA. hunters and non hunters for that matter didn't have any idea of the danger to our herd from commercial deer farms when the power to over see them was taken from the PGC and in fact still don't?
The PGC. dropped the ball by not making the effort to educate the hunters and non hunters of PA. When it comes to the danger deer farms and still are dropping the ball to this day.
Mean while the PA. Deer Farmers Association are spreading their propaganda by claiming that they are currently searching for a cure for CWD.
A huge part of the PGC's responsibilities is educating not just the hunters of PA. but every citizen of PA. as well, which they failed miserably at and still are. So instead of wasting time and money banning the importation of dead deer carcasses into PA. ( something that has never caused one CWD. case in any state) they need to start educating the hunters and citizens of PA. about the Trojan Horse which is commercial deer farms. If they would have done it prior to being stripped of the authority to over see deer farms, the powers to be wouldn't have been able to strip them of it.
You can make all the excuses in the world for the PGC and try to put the blame on the hunters of PA. but there is no excuse for the PGC. and nothing stopping them from finally starting to do their job by lobbing the legislature ( which would be more beneficial then banning dead deer carcusses regardless if you agree or not because that is what is needed to be done even though you think it would fall on deaf ears) and also finally start educating the hunters and citizens of PA. about the dangers of our deer farms.
If the ODNR. can lobby and educate the hunters and non hunters of OH. even though commercial deer farms do not fall under their charge why can't the PGC?

That would be a good thing! You cannot just go take 4 or 5 animals out of an area to be tested and think you have a large enough sample to tell you what is going on on the area with CWD.

#19 ·
Educating the public on the dangers of deer farms now would simply be a history lesson. The damage has been done. We'll never get that genie back into the bottle. I think that efforts should be less directed at finger pointing and more towards how are we going to fix this.

#20 ·
The genie isn't out of the bottle, for example it would prevent PA.deer farms from sending 73 CWD. Infected deer to other states and areas of PA. that have never had one positive case in the future like they did to OH. Closing the deer farms will prevent the spread of CWD into areas of PA. and states that have never had one positive case.

I am not making excuses for the PGC SS, you simply don't now what you are talking about, if you were a hunter you would have to have lived under a rock not to know about CWD, had you talked as much to your legislators as you do here when they were preparing to open Pandora's box, perhaps Agriculture would not be helping to spread the disease now. I will say this one more time, slowly for you, the PGC was actually doing something abut the spread of the disease before control was taken away by Ad and the knuckleheads in the General Assembly. Now you think know all the answers about what should have been done, big deal, where were you making noise before now?

Lol! You either live under a rock or are delusional!
Now I will try to speak to you like I do with an Obama/ Hillary supporter when debating politics to better help you comprehend what I'm saying...
At the time the PGC was stripped of over seeing commercial deer farms most hunters and probably many non hunters have heard of CWD. and that it was dangerous to our herd etc, what most hunters and non hunters a like didn't know at the time was what exactly caused it, how it spread etc. and that commercial deer farms were the biggest threat by far of spreading the disease. In fact to this day there are many hunters and non hunters that do not know that commercial deer farms are the biggest threat when it comes to spreading the disease or if a prion, germ, insect or space alien causes it, how it spreads etc. Don't believe me just look back to the numerous threads on this very site as well as every other site or FB. forum about The EHD. outbreak last summer and you will see numerous posts by hunters confusing EHD. With CWD. The PGC. failed to educate the hunters of PA. as well as the non hunting public about the dangers of commercial deer farms when it comes to CWD. prior to being stripped of being in charge of commercial deer operations and they still are failing to this very day. If the PGC. Would have publicly voiced their concerns and educated the hunters and non hunters of PA. about the dangers of CWD. The powers to be would have never been able to strip them of their duties.
You can try to make excuses, spin and even throw childish insults but the fact of matter is, all the PGC. had to do was educate the hunters and non hunters of PA. just like they did and still do about the habitat and other topics, subjects etc.

I was not living under a rock, I was was living in Georgia until recently so I don't know all the history and frankly think it is irrelevant to the points I was trying to make. I am talking about today and the future and the need for co-operation between agencies.

If you want to talk about the past, start your own thread.

Even if they find a cure, it will be too late for the areas that have it in the wild, you can't inoculate an entire herd of wild deer in the wild. The only people it will benefit are those who started this mess to begin with.

A cure is not needed, eliminate commercial deer farms and practices that treat wild deer like livestock and it is very difficult for a wild deer to contract the disease and then spread it other deer under natural conditions.
Yes we will have the current CWD. Areas for many years to come and we will need to eliminate every possible deer we can in those areas but new outbreaks in areas of the state that has never had an outbreak will cease.

#29 ·
Ok Skippy, I see there is no hope for you, you have your mind made up , you are wrong, but you are allowed to be wrong if that is what you want. I have never lived under a rock and never have been delusional but if you want to use that nonsense to support your wrong beliefs carry on if it makes you happy. I don't give too hoots if you want to be wrong, I just don't want others buying into your fantasy.

#30 ·
See there you go with your childish insults again.. : )
You should be required to start every post on this forum for now on with " Once upon a time"....
And like I said, just visit last summers threads on the EHD. outbreak to see hunters mistaking EHD. for CWD.

Really, you are a hoot I guess this isn't an insult by you, "Lol! You either live under a rock or are delusional"! Not to worry, I am a big boy, I can take it and don't cry about it, just bringing it to your attention in case you forgot.
I also believe I have said many times that every Cervid farm in the state should be closed down and isolated by a second fence and the costs born by the cervid farmers, not the state.

#32 ·
I agree that double fencing would help and that shipping infected deer needs to be stopped. But it also appears to be true that the introduction of cwd in the Bedford area came from deer walking across from Maryland and the breakout probably started in West Virginia'

This article discusses it and is based on Penn State research.

Chronic wasting disease research becomes more crucial as cases grow in Pa. deer | Penn State University

This paragraph is from the article.

"In southern Fulton and Bedford counties, we have seen more CWD-positive deer along the border," Walter said. "We have seen over time that it is likely the disease is moving into this area from the West Virginia-Maryland outbreak."

Deer farms are definitely a problem and need to be controlled. But if all the farms were eliminated tomorrow, the problem would not go away.

This article also caught my attention because it touches on why cwd seems to be spreading into some areas and not others. They think it may be due to the differing genetic makeup of deer in different areas of the state, among other factors.

There you go, a common sense approach! Of course in PA, the department of agriculture will defend anyone with the title farmer no matter how detrimental their activities are!
