a new view on kneeling during the Anthem

i just read this in a letter to the editor in the paper today, this section of the letter made me think:

players at any position sometimes take a knee if a player on either team is seriously injured. This prayerful and respectful position is taken with the hope for full recovery of the injured. Teammates and opponents are brought together in a more contemplative spirit of hope and respect that goes beyond the outcome of the game.
When NFL players take a knee during the national anthem, they might be taking a moment analogous to the injury moment. They may be thinking of the history, promises and fragilities of American democracy. They may be hoping for the country’s full recovery from its injuries. The spirit of their demonstration may be honoring what the flag stands for more than the flag is honored by those taking the moment to check their cell messages, step out for another beer, take selfies or horrify themselves by counting the kneeling, the hatted and those not saluting.
Players on all types of sports teams take a knee when someone is injured (wounded) while silently hoping for a healthy recovery for the injured (wounded) player.

SO...

maybe these players are taking a knee because America is injured / wounded and they want to see a healthy recovery. all of us know that America is wounded and floundering, tilting one way then the other but not on a steady course. our leaders do not seem to be helping or even wanting to help straighten out the problems they caused.

maybe, just maybe, kneeling is showing how wounded this nation truly is but they failed to get the correct message out. what if entire stadiums started kneeling and got the message out thru the press that America is wounded and congress / senate better fix it or we will on election day.

just a thought.

Bull cookies. This is a protest that was started as a disrespectful response to white police officers involved in black shootings. It ramped up as disrespect to the National Anthem, the American Flag and the United States of America. To try and turn it around as stated in the OPs post is rediculos. Do not try to make into something it is not.

I agree with all the posts above...besides there is always someone who has a grievance with one thing or another...should there always be people kneeling during the national anthem from now on?...what message does that send to the rest of the world?

IMO...when the anthem is playing we should ALL stand together as a nation and be grateful for the things that are right about this country...if someone can't find anything to be grateful for then maybe they should LEAVE!

IMO...for the record...we are a wounded nation...being able to express our wounds is one of the things that makes this country great...knowing when it's inappropriate to express our wounds is what these self-centered, brainwashed, immature, ingrates don't understand...rant over.

It's an interesting thought and I respect you for it and a good post as well. However I believe that the real wounded party here is the money grubbing NFL and the Players Union that sees that the fans (the REAL money source) as having a limit on what they will accept from the players themselves. Sure, there are many players who are genuine good citizens. But, it only takes a few bad ones or bad behavior to destroy the good, regardless of how sincere the "good" may be. it's not rocket science, it's money and it's reduction is being noticed by the NFL and the players.
Hey, I hear that TV is suffering too because people are turning away from it.

While I don't agree with protesting during the anthem, you are somewhat correct. I believe when the whole thing started Kapernick was sitting on the bench for the anthem, until some of his friends/teammates suggested to him that kneeling would be somewhat more respectful.

I was in the local American Legion last evening with my wife and another couple. The DJ started at 7pm, the first song he played was the National Anthem .........everyone stood and faced the flag, no hats on, hands over heart..............
I am quite sure if anyone would have taken a knee in there, they would have wound up in the dumpster.........very quickly........

Certainly a better class of people than the NFL harbors...........IMO.

Struck a nerve with me also. I have not watched a NFL game since the tunnel dwellers the Steelers pulled off their stunt which backfired on them. Then a group of us made a trip to Arlington cemetery 9/29- 10/1 and when we got back home was told about this goofball doing this. Google search this. Did someone take a knee at Arlington Cemetary on 9/29 and youll really be mad.

Stooping pretty low IMO.... How about the Saints calling out a Veteran who refused their feel good award because he believes the kneeling is disrespectful ! Why don't the Saints respect his right to free speech and peaceful protest without demeaning comments ? I don't know what the Veteran did to warrant him being picked for the award, but just serving puts him above most on the field. https://www.aol.com/article/news/20...ard-because-of-kneeling-nfl-players/23266138/
