Ok I picked up a savage 25/06 Wood stock bolt action with a accu trigger for my son , I didn't want to go to much of a gun with heavy recoil " he is only 9". So what's a good bullet for deer size game ? I honestly have no experience with caliber I bought it for him cause of light recoil plus I got great deal on gun .

Rifle is topped with a leupold 4x 12. Thanks for the input .

I've had one or more 25's in my family since they were first introduced back in the 60's...a great cartridge !! It comes under the "if I could only have one" group. I truly couldn't tell how many deer have been harvested with it in my family, but plenty and all with the 117 grain Sierra spitzer boat tail, sitting on top of H-4350 powder and a Rem 0 1/2 primer. All of them will shoot this combination under an inch all day long...you couldn't have picked a better cartridge, get yourself one !

:) One of the biggest racks I have hanging on my wall I took with a 25/06 and like the fellas above, I used 117 gr Sierra GK bullets and H4350 powder. But if your son is 9 you might want to tame the load down which you can do and that's one of the nice things about the 25/06 you can load it down to 257 Roberts velocity and still have plenty of power for deer hunting with light recoil. Good luck, hope your boy gets a slammer.

I have a ruger hawkeye all weather in 25-06. First rifle I purchased for myself as both a good mix between a varmint and a deer rifle. Of all the rifles / calibers i owe, i still seem to fall back to my 25-06 as my go to.

I use 110 grain nosler accubond and 100 grain nosler ballistic tips for deer and they work great and are very accurate.

Ive been using IMR 4350 for both.

Bought my first 25-06 in 1978. M700ADL walnut, that's actually pretty light in weight and still shoots great.

Originally shot 100gr and 117gr Sierras in it. Nothing but 100gr Btips since they came out, loaded over 54grs of IMR 4831.

Now numerous powders that work well with this cartridge, but nothin' was broke with the original load, so i ain't gonna try to fix it.

Same load I shoot in my heavy barrel 25-06 and that one has taken deer at a tad over 500 yards, quite a few others of the 300 to 400 yard category. Farthest I've ever dumped one with the M700 so far, was a bit over 200 yards.

Recoil is not an issue, great accuracy and tends to knock 'em dead where they stand or trot.

Winchester Ballistic Silvertip Ammo 25-06 Remington 115 Grain Rapid

Dang beat me to it 25-0TT6 LOL.
I use Win silvertips in my 30-06 and they work great, but my buddy uses a 25-06 and swears by the Win Silvertips too.
As far as I know he's never lost a deer he shot with them. Use the 115 gr though they are better all around than the 85 gr.

By loading a good bonded bullet or the Nosler Partition, a 25-06 is transformed into an elk rifle. MY USAF buddy in Wyoming hunts everything with his 25-06 and with great results. Cow elk makes a genuine dinner plate trophy!

The sons rifle will do 3/4 inch at 125yds with regular Hornady 100gr. Dont remember the powder offhand but I'm thinking I had them moving at 3Kfps Probably 4064 or 4350 IMR.

It has taken every deer in front of it since he was 12 with 1 shot. Recoil was not a problem.
