Pine Creek Gorge

My girlfriend and I are thinking about a hiking/camping trip in Pine Creek Gorge for Labor Day weekend. I'm looking at the West Rim Trail as a possibility, but the Pine Creek Trail looks pretty good too. I've never been there, anybody have any tips or advice?

Anything up there is beautiful. I've only done the Turkey, but I'm not a real hiker. Kayaking the gorge from Ansonia to Blackwell is a nice trip too when there is enough water.

Re: Pine Creek Gorge

Great area to hike . Personally I have not hiked that trail but south of there is the Black Forest Trail out of Slate Run . It is a real treat to hike this 42 mile trail and then stay a night at Hotel Manor . Have a great holiday and be safe !

Enjoy each day afield as if it were your last.....take the time to take it all in !

Re: Pine Creek Gorge

By the Pine Creek Trail do you mean the bike trail? It is a really great bike trail, with a level gradient and great scenery. It's very popular with bikers, and I see people day hiking on it, and using it for fishing access to Pine Creek. But I've never seen anyone doing a backpacking trip on it. I suppose you could though.

I've only done short walks on parts of the West Rim Trail, but it's very nice up there, with many great views of the canyon. Some of the best scenery in PA, IMHO. If you want to do a real hiking / backpacking trip, I'd recommend that

Cedar Run Inn would be a nice "treat", to stay at and have a meal, on your last evening, a splurge after all that hiking.

Look at the Tioga State Forest map. It shows the trail. There is some real hiking involved. There is a lot of elevation gain from the valley up to the top.

I have to admit, that the black forest trail was killer. I have hiked a lot of places, but the black forest trail was one of the most challenging.

Re: Pine Creek Gorge

We wound up doing about 16 miles of the West Rim trail from Barbour Rock to the Bradley Wales Picnic Area. Used the car shuttle from Pine Creek Outfitters, they pick your car up from your put-in spot and drop it off for you at your take-out.

We camped right by the trailhead the first night, covered 11 miles and change the first day and camped right beside one of the vistas below Siemens Trail.

Second day we took Little Slate trail up to the road, ditched our packs, and went back to the West Rim trail and went the rest of the way to Bradley Wales with just water bottles.

It was an awesome hike, rained a little on Monday and was kinda damp and foggy the rest of the day, but still really pretty. We're both about half-crippled now, though. Gonna have to get in better shape and get lighter equipment before we try anything more ambitious.
