Cherry Springs

I'm looking for some information on tenting at Cherry Springs. I've read some things on the DCNR and state parks websites, but there isn't too much about the tenting. Any information would be good.

Camping: vault toilets
There are 30 campsites and a sanitary dump station. All sites include a picnic table, lantern hanger and fire ring. Reservations are not accepted. The campground is open from the second Friday in April and closes in December. Its first come first served

Re: Cherry Springs

Thanks. I've read that stuff. I was looking for some personal advice such as if it is a nice place to tent, if they are ever full, if it is a big deal to tent on the observation area opposed to the campsites, etc.... I have a camper near Slate Run and thought about heading up some night to check out. I can't rememember the last time I slept in a tent.

Can't help with present day, back in the early 90's it wasn't anything like it is now

With the camper near Slate Run, have you done much hiking and tenting on the Black Forest Trail? I'm planning on being there end of September.

Enjoy life and take a hike on the AT.

Re: Cherry Springs

I have never camped there but we have a cabin 1/4 from there. I beleive there is a number for the supervisor of the park on the DCNR site that can give you more info.

Not much hiking for me. A lot of fly fishing during April-June, along with some kayaking and biking.

Re: Cherry Springs

I was wondering if you can still take the dirt road from Big Pine Trail (off of the BFT) back to Slate Run. It runs along side Pine Creek. If you can do that it cuts off about 11 miles of the BFT if we need to cut it short.

Enjoy life and take a hike on the AT.

Re: Cherry Springs

The park office is the size of a outhouse! The camping spots are not too bad. I went up during a meteor shower and there were still camping spots left. I slept in a tent and had a fire. I could see the milky way through my tent. The park ranger told me that the guys in the astronomy field get real mad if someone shines white light, so if your taking pictures and the back lcd screen shines i'm sure they'll yell at you. The public lot has dirt mounds to block car lights and i could see real good. Take a red light with you so you dont lose night vision when your looking and walking. Also, i got really wet with dew later in the night. My last picture was all blurry, so i checked my lens and it was coated with dew! Make sure you check the clear sky chart.

Not only is my short-term memory horrible, but so is my short-term memory.
