new tent ?

Hey I'm lookin to get a new tent and was hoping to get some input on what to go with. I'm lookin to spend $100-150, 2 man, and something light for backpacking. Any suggestions would be great.

Re: new tent ?

I own a Eureka Zues 2 Le, very nice tent, light weight, good room for two people, has entrances on both sides so you don't have to climb over each other. not a whole lot of vestibule space, but enough for your boots and an average size pack.
the down side... while it is free standing, for maximum space and ventilation you will need at least 6 pegs (10 if you peg every loop). The ones it comes with are plenty strong and light.

Here's a link to a place with a good price on one.

and a photo of mine pitched on Assateague Island in MD.

My second suggestion would be a tent from Big Agnes http://www.bigagnes.com/ I own a Seedhouse SL 1 which was the lightest tent I could find on the market when I bought it. They are definitely more expensive tents, but I've been very happy with mine. Th big thing about their tents is that it is a true double wall tent. Meaning you have an inner tent that is mesh/screen, and then a fly that is over the tent frame. This prevents condensation from building up, and in the event of rain you can't contact the fly and create leaks.

Re: new tent ?

I'll second Eureka but I use the Apex 2, a little heavier but about the same design.
Try picking up the latest issue of Backpacker magazine. It is their gear review issue and has all kinds of tents compared with a listing of weights and dimensions.

Re: new tent ?

The eureka tents don't fair very well from a critical perspective which is why they have a low price but they have very good value for occasional use. If you want the BEST deals on eureka go to their annual tent sale in Binghamton. The deals are outstanding and it is a regional event that pulls people in from surrounding states and Canada. It's a madhouse on the first day with lines maybe over 100' with scout leaders buying pallets full of tents and Canadians getting cheap tents. You will see the Canadians taking their brand new tent out of the box, throwing it in the dirt and stomping on it, rolling it in a ball and throwing it in the trunk. That way there is no question about it being new and having to pay duty.

I have their Gossamer 1, Timberlite 2, Timberline 2, Geom 3, Sentinel 4, and Space II 10x10.

forgot I have the Alpine XT too.

My kids use the tetragon pretty hard and it still looks new.
