Re: Hiking the Mason Dixon trail 3 days 2 nights
Because it was Sunday thru Wednesday and with some time off I decided a solo of the Mason Dixon trail mainly because it's only 20 minute drive, my wife will drop me off at Apollo Park and after 2 nights 3 days of hiking she will pick me up 45 minutes from home, great right!
The southern portion of this trail is spectacular with the Susquehanna river in view, water falls surrounded by Rododendron for miles. That's if the trail is in the woods. I guess 10 miles of the 40 mile hike was on hard road with some roads having 50 mph speed for 2 miles with heavy traffic. Also parts of the trail is not marked causing me to back track up and down hills and roads looking for the blaze, referring to my compass or asking for directions.
On the 3rd day my next stop was Broad Creek Scout camp where I was going to spend the night. Again the last 4 miles was on hard road with 2 mile to go and still early I decided to take a 15 minute brake. WELL the only place out of the wind along the road was on the edge of some ornamental pines on someone's property in a development 30 feet from the road which was still on the MD trail. After 10 min break a voice from behind ask me what I was doing? I turn around and I'm being approached by 3 Maryland State troopers with lights flashing, hands on their weapons and ordering me to stand up. While explaining I was hiking for 3 days and giving my ID I was being frisk, Thank God I took my Mora bushcraft knife off my pack straps and placed it in the side pocket. After a 30 min interrogation and asking me why I would want to hike for 3 days and where do you sleep ( I didn't want to get into the hammock thing ) they decided I wasn't a threat and left me. Oh did I mention the property I was on was owned by one of the State Troopers
In the future I think I'll stay away from trails going thru populated areas and stick with the AT
