Work out hikes near Pine Grove, PA.

Heading back out to Montana this year elk hunting, last year besides the gym we tried to take at least 3 work out hikes each week. Can anyone recommend some hikes in the area with some serious elevation gain?

Re: Work out hikes near Pine Grove, PA.

SGL 39 around Hells Kitchen, lots of up hill down hill places to hike. Out around Rockland in the gamelandson the north side of Rt. 322. We always put about 50 or so pounds in a pack and use the boots we plan on hunting with and find a few favorite routes just for exercise. Hope that helps. Gary U

Re: Work out hikes near Pine Grove, PA.

Get a map of Weiser State Forest by calling their office. The maps are free.

And you can find online maps at AcmeMapper.com.

There are some ridges just a little north of Pine Grove with 500-600 feet elevation gain from valley to top.

Also, do some walking every day. Even if it's on moderate terrain, walking every day really helps.

We do 211 quite a bit, probably the toughest hike is from cold spring parking lot up to the AT via the horseshoe trail. Also do RT443 up to Second Mountain. I get bored hiking the same trail over and over again.

look into the Appalachian trail specifically the area that runs from 501 to 645.
or drive toward Tremont to echo valley and walk back the Black Creek road to the pipeline and climb that sucker a few times
You also have Blackwood very close, just outside of Tremont, lots of nice elevations back in there about 3+ miles in the road.

You want a decent day hike, do The Pinnacle near Hamburg. Take the Appalachian trail route to the top. Its steep and rocky and should be good training. The views from up there are amazing. Probably our favorite Pa hike.
