compass

My compass has developed quite an air bubble , so I am in the market for a new one. There are so many choices , so am asking some advice. A baseplate model preferred with a setting to lock in declination . Thanks fellow hikers !

Enjoy each day afield as if it were your last.....take the time to take it all in !

Re: compass

Silva Ranger but if you draw in your magnetic north lines on your topos you automatically account for declination in which case you can go with a cheaper Silva (less features) but still very reliable

I've had an army issue for 20 years and she's still airtight.

They are hard to beat for the money. I have two well-used ones, and bought leather belt holsters for them from Forestry Suppliers Co. years ago. What I like is the adjustable declination, so there is no math or estimating the meridian no matter if you're using a USGS map or a private map from 1926.
