Science Funding Slashed Under Corbett Administrati

Quote:
Mem-bers of Penn-syl-va-nia Gov. Tom Corbett’s admin-is-tra-tion rou-tinely insist their Mar-cel-lus Shale drilling pol-icy is based on science.

But doc-u-ments obtained by StateIm-pact Penn-syl-va-nia, as well as inter-views with more than a dozen peo-ple who work both inside and out of state gov-ern-ment, high-light top-level deci-sions to dimin-ish or defund drilling-related sci-en-tific research in the com-mon-wealth. Sci-en-tists say the decline in government-funded research dur-ing the first year of the Cor-bett Admin-is-tra-tion leaves open ques-tions about how ani-mals, wildlife and the cli-mate are affected by Pennsylvania’s drilling boom.

Emails and inter-views show Cor-bett appointee Richard Allan, who serves as Depart-ment of Con-ser-va-tion and Nat-ural Resources Sec-re-tary, over-saw sig-nif-i-cant changes to a state sci-en-tific research pro-gram and removed projects exam-in-ing the impact of nat-ural gas drilling and cli-mate change from a rec-om-mended fund-ing list.

Last month, Allan slashed the bud-get of the agency’s wildlife research pro-gram by nearly 70 per-cent. He did this with-out con-sult-ing the four-person staff respon-si-ble for vet-ting sub-mit-ted pro-pos-als and rec-om-mend-ing them for funding.

Imagine if Corbett controlled the PA Game Commission?

Allan has said that too many of the research projects were already being addressed by agency employ-ees.
I know this one involves grant money but one has to wonder how many redundant studies are happening between different state agencies now?

You mean he is not going along with the Rendell Administration studies into Climate Change?

Possible.
Most hunters don't know what a Scarlet Tanager is and likely don't care. A study on them is no differnet than a study on bobcats or fishers, to the avg PA resident.
The PA outdoors or wildlife are not part of his concerns. We will have to live with it.

True....but if 2 different state agencies are both conducting a study on the Scarlet Tanager that doesn't seem cost effective either.

One of those "left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing" type things.

Re: Science Funding Slashed Under Corbett Administrati

the tananger and wood thrush have been in decline for several decades...I agree that the fragmentation is not helping either species but it has been going on for quite some time and the ornithological community is well aware of the fact that fragmentation of the forset is one of the suspected reasons for decline...

Now we need to fund a study to see if fragmentation of the forest caused by drilling is the same or different than other types of fragmentation? Hogwash!

Not questioning whether we need another study....Just questioning if 2 different state agencies conducting the same studies is redundant.

Recently had an exchange in a thread about game & non-game species. It was brought up about some non-game species being an "indicator species" so it was still important to keep track of that.

So just as an example...let's say the DCNR has an active study going on the tananger and wood thrush. Hypothetically, let's say these things are an indicator species for one thing or another. Would it be prudent for the PGC to run the same study watching an indicator species?
