Speaking as a chemist I can tell you that natural gas, which is mostly methane and some ethane, is not a mineral. Alkanes are gases which can also be liquified.
Minerals are compounds like talc, bauxite, calcite, tremolite, etc., solids. I hope the lawsuit stands but it probably won't due to wording issues in the deeds and past practice.

Ok, so as it currently stands for PA law, if you own the "mineral" rights but not the "O&G" rights, do you still own the coal bed methane or does that go with the "O&G" rights even though it is produced from the coal seam?

I think that is the precedent they are trying to go after here.
