New Member looking for hunting mentor

Hi guys

I am new to the hunting game, I am very interesting in hunting and would really like to know the rules and places to hunt in PA (near Philadelphia). I am also looking for a experience mentor who can teach me how to hunt as well. Looking forward to meeting you guys.

welcome to far as rules read the booklet that should come with your license or go online to the PGC website where you can read it online. there might be someone near you that might help mentor you. as far as hunting spot find a local game land or state forest and scout it to familiar yourself with it. good luck and ask if you need more answers.

Welcome.... Look on-line for hunting/fishing/sportsman clubs in your area. These are members only(some allow a guest/family member) clubs that usually have a rifle/ shotgun range(or both), archery range or 3d course maybe a pond/creek and "clubhouse". Some have limited land open to hunting by club members but not all do. Most are fairly cheap to join and all welcome members to help out for events and routine maintenance... A good spot to make friends and maybe find a mentor.

Not to be a downer but most PUBLIC areas within an hour and a half to the Philly region get hammered pretty hard. You might want to check out local township/county parks... some allow hunting some even limit it by requiring a "permit".
Archery used to be a good "low-key" way to get access to some suburban properties but with the rise of archery the last few years it is getting tougher for "strangers".

Welcome to HPA!

You might want to check into Nesaminy State Park. They have a limited by permit only bow hunt there every year. You have to fill out an application, then it's a lottery draw I believe. There are quite a few deer in there, and quite a few rules as well, but it's a place to start.

Tyler State Park is another permit, lottery decided hunt. It's shotgun using 00buckshot only, (and they mean 00, not any other size), in December. I hunted it when I first moved to Pa, and it doesn't require much skill once the shooting starts and the deer run around.

Tyler also has a permit only bow hunt that I am unfamiliar with. Both hunts in Tyler require having at least one 5D doe tag, and multiples are suggested.

Hope this helps.
