Today was the first full pads practice. Wee Man was a little nervous so I had him suit up in all his gear and meet me in the front yard. I had him run at me at full speed and hit me for a bit, then had him try to run past me. After I knocked him down a few times he realized it didn't hurt and he had a ball. He went to practice and ended up grouping up with the linemen. Turns out he went to the wrong group and the coach put him with the running backs. He was a little bummed because he loves to block. Those of you who have met me would probably be suprised to learn I was a lineman and not a running back when I played football. I can teach him all kinds of blocking and tackling techniques but ball running is a bit foreign to me. He quickly changed his tune because they ran RB blocking drills and he realized he got a running start before he laid on a block. He likes hitting with a head of steam. The coach is running a Knute Rockne, throw back offense that has a 1 and 2 back 2 yds behind the center, a 3 back 1 yd behind the rt guard and a 4 back behind the power tackle. (from left to right,LE,LG, C,RG,RT,PT,RE) The center direct snaps to one of the backs and there isn't any QB. At 7 years old, what passing game are you going to have anyway. Well, they lined him up at the #1 back and he took a bunch of direct snaps, coralled them all, including one at his laces, and hit the hole with enthusiasm. He's number 44 in your programs, number 1 in your hearts.
