Poll: Renaming PSU stadium for Paterno favored

March 16, 2012

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — A new poll released Friday shows Pennsylvania's registered voters favor renaming Penn State's football stadium in honor of longtime coach Joe Paterno, who died in January.

The Quinnipiac University survey found that 46 percent of those polled thought the school should rename Beaver Stadium, while 40 percent were opposed.

The idea was more strongly backed by those who described themselves as "very or somewhat interested" in college football, and by those over age 65.

Beaver Stadium is named for James Beaver, a Pennsylvania governor of the late 19th century who served on the school's board of trustees.

Pollsters surveyed nearly 1,300 registered voters over six days earlier this month. The poll's margin of error was plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

A movement has percolated for several years to rename the stadium for Paterno, who coached at the school for some six decades. Supporters have also suggested renaming the street leading to Beaver Stadium for him.

The Paterno family name already adorns the library and a spiritual life center on campus. The university has said it is working on plans to memorialize Paterno, who was a living symbol of Penn State before his death from lung cancer.

Paterno was fired by the board of trustees in November, following the arrest of his former longtime lieutenant, Jerry Sandusky, on child sexual abuse charges.

Paterno was not charged with any crime, and prosecutors said he was not considered a target, but he expressed regret about his own handling of the matter and trustees have attributed his dismissal to poor leadership after he was told by a graduate assistant of an alleged case of molestation.

Sandusky, 68, awaits trial in May on 52 charges that he abused 10 boys over 15 years. He remains confined to his home while he awaits trial, and has denied the allegations.

I'd much rather have Park Ave renamed The Paterno Way. Stadium is already named, kinda hard to strip a guys name off and I don't like the whole Paterno Field at Beaver Stadium thing or Beaver-Paterno Stadium either, similar to Bryant-Denny.

I'm not opposed, just rather have The Paterno Way

If they stripped away names off streets and buildings in Philly of those with skeleton in their closet or acted inappropriately according to societies standards you would just have the "Mint", and loads of streets just called "Avenue A". What did Cecil B Moore do besides have a mans last will and testament voided? Even his holiness F Rizzo today would have done hard jail time for his antics while he was mayor and police commissioner.

When a court and a jury of his peers find Joe Paterno guilty of anything other then expecting his superiors to do the appropriate thing then I will think less of him.

Without Joe, his program and ethics Beaver Stadium would still be a 30K seat athletic field where football and the track and field events shared the same facility.
This honor was to acknowledge the man for his contributions to a town, University and athletics program, not to anoint him man of the century.

Would be a very fitting gesture to a man who gave much to many.

Hey, let's throw away a lifetime of goodwill, teaching, giving, parenting, commitment, leadership and positive impact on the lives of tens or hundreds of thousands of people for the uninformed judgement of a single act by you. Renaming the stadium is the least that the school could give back to Joe.

How about telling us all about the monumental accomplishments of your life that put you in such a lofty position to pass such judgement.

First, JoePa didn't commit the atrocities. Second, he followed established PSU procedures in handling it. Third, he's the ONLY person involved who actually admitted he made some mistakes and wished he'd done more. A 30 year old grad assistant who stood 6'4, weighing 230 saw a boy getting raped and decided to call his daddy. Was Joe flawless? No, and he, if alive, would be the first to tell you that. But to allow one incident where he could have done more (nobody accuses him of doing nothing) to outweigh a half century of greatness is, for lack of a better term, stupid.

We’re not going to apologize for caring. We’re not.

Yup...& i think the Federal Grand Jury investigation will root out some things that will certainly embarrass many who were so quick to blindly pull the trigger!! This matter is far from being over IMO.

I paid full-tuition to Penn State, I feel I'm allowed the right to judge the actions of the football coach. Basically , for me, it all comes down to whether you want to absolve him because he did what he was required to do and then wiped his hands of the situation, or you want to hold such an excellent human being at a higher standard because the man had the power to see that the situation was completely investigated and he didn't. What do you think would have been done if it was one of Paternos grand kids? A little more maybe? You can't deny he could have saw it through to the end if he was willing to practically dismantle the football program. But he didn't. If after the trial we find that Paterno knew practically nothing at all then maybe then I'll start reviewing how I regard him. You can't really think thats what we'll find though. Perhaps we should hold off on psu sainthood just yet.
