Pens Re-Sign Forward Craig Adams
Thursday, 06.09.2011 / 3:45 PM / News
Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins signed forward Craig Adams to a two-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The contract has an average annual value of $675,000, and runs through the 2012-13 season.

Adams, 34, played the last two-plus seasons with Pittsburgh and was a key contributor to the team’s Stanley Cup championship season in 2009. Adams, who was originally claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh March 4, 2009, was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent July 1, but chose instead to re-sign with the Penguins.

A two-time Stanley Cup champion, Adams (6-foot, 197 pounds) has been a key defensive player and penalty killer for the Penguins since arriving in Pittsburgh. Adams, who led the team’s forwards with 3:05 shorthanded minutes per game, helped Pittsburgh become the No. 1-ranked penalty killing unit in the NHL in 2010-11 with a success rate of 86.1 percent – the first time in franchise history the Penguins boasted the league’s top PK.

In his 10-year NHL career, Adams has totaled 115 points (41G-74A) in 669 career games while also playing for Carolina (2000-08) and Chicago (2008-09). He’s added nine points (6G-3A) in 73 postseason games, and won his first Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2006.

Adams played four seasons at Harvard University (1995-99). He totaled 29 goals and 62 points in his collegiate career.

You really under estimated the ramifications of the boondoggle you have just perpetrated!

Good signing.

Some details are emerging regarding the requests of certain players:

• It is believed that Talbot, 27, wants a four-year contract, something the Penguins are almost certainly unwilling to offer.

• Dupuis, 32, wants a three-year deal, which doesn't figure to fit into the Penguins' plans. Shero rarely gives players over 30 a deal that is more than two years.

• Rupp, 31, wants a two-year deal, but it is believed that his financial request isn't in the Penguins' ballpark.

• Right winger Dustin Jeffrey, 23, is a restricted free agent coming off ACL surgery. Shero wants to sign him this summer.

As I have said in the past Talbot will be gone and I am ok with that. I would like those other 4 to stay but they have to be willing to play ball. Dupuis especially has to realize he needs the Pens offensive players around him to put up the numbers he does. Unless a team with similar talent ponies up he probably won't get a deal he wants.

Re: Pens re-sign Adams through 2012-13

Max is a proven playoff moneyman, and he's only 27. He's a good PK man, and will do whatever it takes to win, including getting pounded by some moron with his team down 3-0 in a playoff game. Maybe a 3 year deal could be reached. I like Rupp, but he's not worth eleventy billion dollars. I would love to see Shero trade for a guy like Thorton, especially if Godard walks. That is, if Bylsma would be willing to man up and let Thorton play, instead of sitting everyone who drops the gloves like he did to Engelland and Godard after the debacle on Long Island.

Re: Pens re-sign Adams through 2012-13

Yup--and that turned out great. You would have thought he would have become an NHL capable 6th defenseman with all the ice time. But apparently, he left the courage in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Our players probably forgot that you can golf in April. I realize he's better at moving the puck than Engelland, but Bobby Orr or Paul Coffey he ain't. He's not even close to being the puck mover Letang is. HIT SOMEONE!!

Kitten Fur got beat up by Sidney Crosby. That is not what you want in a defenseman.
