The DeSean Jackson saga has come to an end.
After months of speculation as to Jackson's future with the team, the Eagles released the Pro Bowl wide receiver this morning.
"After careful consideration this offseason, Eagles decide to part ways with DeSean Jackson. The team informed him of his release today," the Eagles said in a tweet Friday morning.
The 27-year-old, the Eagles second-round pick in 2008 out of California, set career-highs last year with 82 catches for 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns in first-year coach Chip Kelly's high-powered offense.
However, Jackson's future has been in question since the end of the season, when he was asked if wanted a new contract.
"I definitely feel it's something deserving," Jackson said in January. "We'll see how that plays out, and hopefully we can work things out smoothly and not have to worry about anything out of the ordinary."
Jackson received $18 million guaranteed when he signed a $48.5-million contract in March 2012 that would have paid him $9.7 million in 2014.
"I feel like I've proved everyting on the field. To do some of the things that top receivers in this league do, I think like I'm right there at the top," Jackson said in January.
In six seasons, Jackson caught 357 passes for 6,117 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also averaged 9.9 yards on 131 punt returns, taking four back for touchdowns.
Earlier this week Jackson reportedly told teammates he would be back with the Eagles in 2014, but Kelly was less-than-committal earlier this week when he spoke to reporters in Orlando at the NFL owner's meetings.
