.17 mach IV ?? contender barrel

Hello,
I am in need of some advice.
A neighbor of mine gave me a box full of gun parts because she knew I like to shoot / reload ect. they were her husbands and she wants them out of the house.
all i saw at first were the boxes of brass and thanked her.
After i got home and looked a little deeper, it seems I now have a brand new match bullberry contender barrel in .17 machIV,
assorted dies, 9 boxes of brand new 221 rem fireball brass, 100 berger bullets, and some reloading data.
although i do reload, and shoot, I know nothing of the round, nor do i own a T/c Contender.
The barrel is 18 inches from the breach to the muzzle.
I explained to her that all this is a lilltle over my head, and she told me she didnt care, she did not want them back.
Can any one here shed some lite on this round, and give me some kind of idea what its all worth?
Thanks to all who have time to help,
Roland

Re: .17 mach IV ?? contender barrel

The Mach IV is the fore runner of the Remington 17 Fireball. As a 17 cal. it is efficient and most seem to be accurate. It would be worth getting a contender carbine frame. Let that baby loose on varmints & predators.

Re: .17 mach IV ?? contender barrel

Like GD said, the 17 machIV is a predecessor to the 17 remington fireball. The brass is formed from 221 fireball brass or 223 brass. Makes a very accurate and excellent varmint round. Looks like you have the brass forming dies and an older single lug barrel, the newer ones have a 2 piece lug. To give you a point of reference on what it might be worth I just recently paid 375.00 for a similar set up in 17 fireball.

Grey,
I am looking to sell the whole set up.
James,
So $450 or so would not be out of line for set up?
thanks again, sorry it took so long to check back,

Re: .17 mach IV ?? contender barrel

I shoot the .17 Fireball in a T/C Encore and it is a great cartridge. There are no factory loads for the Mach IV that I know of so it will require handloading but this is a great package. Whoever was reloading for the Mach IV was reforming the .221 Fireball cases down to .17 caliber. You may want to check the cases to see if they have already been reformed to .17 caliber by comparing the neck opening with the .17 caliber bullets. That would be good information for a prospective buyer to have since it would save them a step to have the cases ready to load.

The older I get, the stronger gravity becomes.
