I finally got it all together after 3 years of talking about it.

Super 14" 30-30 barrel. Redfield's 3 ring mount for Contender and a Nikon 2.5-8 x 28 Encore scope. Got it out to the range today. Defninately not as easy to hold as a rifle, but I got her sighted in nice. Can't wait for the deer woods.

Very, very cool!! You'll enjoy that one. I shoot Encores in both rifle and pistol. My 15" .243 pistol barrel is a great shooter.

The older I get, the stronger gravity becomes.

Very COOL! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do all of my TC items.
I think that my wife don't care either.
All I tell her is don't ever sell them for what I told you I paid for them!

Re: My New Deer Rifle

Looks great. I hunted hogs and deer in Texas with my 10" .30-30 G2 until I decided to give the .444 Marlin 14" a try. If I were making any more challenging shots, or on bigger deer or pigs, I definitely would have gone up to a 14" .30-30 barrel, as the 10" has such poor ballistics, but it carries really well for tracking pigs.

10" .30-30 with piglet for the smoker:

.444 with the ugliest, but very functional, grip:

How do you like the Nikon scope? My Leupold 4X stinks. I was looking to replace it with a Simmons 2-7X, but only expect to use it around 2-3X.

Re: My New Deer Rifle

I'm afraid to comment on the scope too much. The optics are excellent as one would expect from nikon. I don't think that the (ballistic drop compensator) BDC reticle is very useful in this application. I sighted in at the range on 8 power to get it as close as possible. I will probably hunt with the scope set to 3 power most of the time. Thats the real benefit to this scope. I can zero in the crosshairs on 8 power and then hunt at a more useful setting. This handgun with a scope thing is new to me. I was very surprised how difficult it was to hold on target at 100 yards.

Re: My New Deer Rifle

Nice rig, Lake444. Whats the deal with that grip? Home-made? Custom?

Re: My New Deer Rifle

Thanks. It's just one I made with Bondo to help with the recoil. It makes the .444 very comfortable to shoot in the G2 and .30-30 feel about like shooting .38 Special through an N-frame S&W. It's ugly, but it works. When I did it, there just weren't many accessories out there for the G2, like good rubber grips.

Re: My New Deer Rifle

Yes, As you can see, I am using the Pachmayr Decererator. That thing still bucks like a mule with the 30-30. No "smack" to the hand though. My father still uses wood grips on his .454 casull revolver. Feels like you just swung a bat as hard as you can against a brick wall.
