.308 H&R Ultra rifle problems

I see that there are quite a few posts for the H&R rifles so I figured I would try and get some help. I have one chambered in .308 and every once in a while when I fire the gun, the barrel breaks open without pressing the barrel break. It has happened while firing on the range, and it also happened on the last day of the rifle season which I think caused me to miss the deer in my scope. I was just wondering if anyone else has this issue, and how this can be fixed?

You need to stop shooting that rifle.
And have a pro look at it.

Re: .308 H&R Ultra rifle problems

I am planning on taking it to a gunsmith to look at, just was wondering if anyone would know what the problem is or if anyone else experiences the same issue. Thanks for the reply.

What happens when remington buys a company known for producing good, inexpensive, reliable firearms...

Big Al's "Take-Em" Style Silhouette Decoys Pro-Staff.

Re: .308 H&R Ultra rifle problems

A professional is not needed.

The biggest culprit of that problem is oil on the latch area. The next likely issue is not enough engagement.

First, clean the area shown pointed out in the picture below on the barrel lug, and the catch that comes out to engage it from the receiver. Its a machined area right under the extractor.

If that doesn't fix the problem, you will need a good metal file. You run the file at the SAME angle as the ledge is now. You only take a few swipes at a time. It will not take much metal removal for the latch to engage a little further. I would only take about (5) swipes before refiring the gun to see if it worked. If it continues to open, take (5) more. YOU DO NOT WANT TO TAKE TOO MUCH METAL OFF.

At an angle like this(pretend my knife is a file).

If you have to track your game, then you aren't using a big enuff gun.

Thanks for the info Knight, I'll give it a try and see if that works. Very helpful with the pictures and instructions.

Did you get a chance to try things out yet?

Re: .308 H&R Ultra rifle problems

Not yet. Even though I was off all last week, I was pre-occupied every day taking the flinter out and then in the evenings just too tired to do anything else. Now work is crazy from being off last week. Once things calm down at work, I am going to sit down and give it a try. Thanks for following up.

If the cleaning doesn't work, just be absolutely sure you do not remove too much metal. It doesn't take much to 'F things up.
