Encore Barrels pre and post Thompson Center

People always comment that the T/C made Encore barrels are better than the designated S & W T/C barrels... So if you have some of the older barrels are they worth more? What about the actions does the same apply? Does the new Encores actions and barrels ID them to S & W by name or do you have to break the serial numbers? Just something Encore owners should know.

Hey Uncle Buck,
It has been my experience that the older New Hampshire T/C barrels are of way better quality than the new S&W barrels. In my opinion, T/C used to take great pride in their craftsmanship which was not only evident in the barrel making, but evident in the beautiful muzzleloaders they used to make. I have purchased 2 S&W barrels over the past few years, and the quality is nowhere near what it used to be. As a matter of fact, the post S&W 44 mag barrel I purchased has tooling chatter marks in the chamber area. Since S&W has also seen fit to do away with Foxridge (T/C Custom Shop), I now have my barrels made by companies such as EABCO, MGM, SSK, etc. The way to tell where the barrels and frames are made is simple, if it lists Rochester NH, you are safe to assume it is original T/C, if it says made in MA, it's S&W. Hope this helps

about 4 years ago Cabelas no longer carried Encore barrels in their store. I to prefer to buy EABCO, MGM and Foxridge barrels. They really aren't that much more than T/C barrels being sold now... If you did sell custom barrels you would at least get what you paid for them.. My lone Foxridge 17 Rem barrel is a real shooter.. handgunhuntr thank you for you outstanding input on this matter.
