encore 243 barrel question

do any of you think that having a 26 inch barrel in 243 would add much in velocity ? most rifles now have 22 inch barrels and I have an encore frame and could just get a 243 barrel or go get a new rifle. I want this to hunt mostly ground hogs. do any of you have an opinion on weather the longer barrel would have much effect on longer shots ?

Re: encore 243 barrel question

Longer barrel will give you more velocity, just as a shorter barrel will give you less velocity. As to how much you gain with a 26" compared to a 22" barrel, I'm sure there are a few "geeks" who will have than info for you.

I seem to think that "maybe" it was something like a loss or gain of 300fps per inch after a set velocity has been determined in a certain barrel length. But I haven't delved into that side of ballistics much.

Re: encore 243 barrel question

I think the velocity loss is about 30 -50 fps per inch in a .243 shooting 100 gr bullets. That's pretty negligible. I shoot 24" barrels on my Encores because I like the balance and compactness. Shorter barrels have more noticeable muzzle last. The most important thing is to get a twist rate appropriate for the bullets you intend to shoot. The length of the barrel has little to nothing to do with accuracy. Most factory .243 barrels are 1:10 twist I believe.

The older I get, the stronger gravity becomes.

30-50 sounds a lot better than 300! I knew there was a "3" in there somewhere! LOL!

Re: encore 243 barrel question

I have a 28" pro hunter encore barrel. It's been a long time since I got numbers but I think I was getting about 230 to 250 FPS more velocity than I was getting out of my 788 Remington with an 18 inch barrel. But that 28 inch is a lot of weight. That was 105 grain speers and think 40 grains imr 4350 (dont quote me on that, its from memory)

Your just jealous because I've been chatting online with babes all day!!
