Which do You Prefer? Encore or Contender

Which T/C do you prefer the Encore or the Contender? I do understand that Encore are a bit more rugged for large cal. I'm strickly a Encore owner now. However often though it would be nice to own a Contender too.

Re: Which do You Prefer? Encore or Contender

Well Buck,
I'm a little prejudiced toward the original Contender. It's about 30% lighter than the Encore and handles about 80% of the caliber lineup available. The gurus have studied it long enough to accommodate the velocity equivalents by use of wildcats of many of the cartridges that it couldn't digest.
I refer to the .222 rem mag imp in lieu of 22-250 and the 308 Bellm instead of the 308 win.
It still doesn't afford the use of the 30-06 but I can do with that Bellm an awful lot!
It's longevity has the market sitting heavy with used barrels and accessories which can be readily purchased to build a collection. The Encore is the big brother that S&W has chosen to prevail. I understand the redundancy of maintaining the two lines but I still hold the original contender as my preference. To each his own ...

Think twice, shoot once.

Re: Which do You Prefer? Encore or Contender

I've never owned or shot an Encore, but I do have experience with the Contender. I used to shoot a lot back in the day, then there was a gap and now I'm back in the T/C game.

I have two T/C Contenders (stainless and blued) in four calibers; .223, .22 Hornet, .22 LR and 7-30 Waters. I really don't see a need to go after anything in the Encore line, but some people may have a different view.

Re: Which do You Prefer? Encore or Contender

I prefer the Encore and shoot in it a number of calibers from .17 HMR to .260 to .50 cal. ML. I shoot both rifle and pistol barrels and find the little extra weight to be beneficial in the larger calibers in terms of balance and recoil. With the Encore, I have many more of my favorite calibers available to me such as .243, .260, 7mm-08, and the ML.

The older I get, the stronger gravity becomes.

I vote for neither one. Any company that did away with the single shot, flintlock Hawken, doesn't get a favorable vote from me.

Re: Which do You Prefer? Encore or Contender

I got away from the Contenders when the Encores came out so I didn't have to use wildcats to get performance. It's funny, though, because now I'm looking at some of the same calibers for my Encore as I had in my Contender...

ENCORE. All of my Encores are Pre-S&W and will most likely never buy another. I love the ones I have BUT have no desire to buy one made by S&W. Glad I bought a bunch before T/C sold.

Ah, it's still a Hawken for me in a TC. Besides, it's the only rifle I have that doesn't use a primer.

Re: Which do You Prefer? Encore or Contender

I have a 30.30 Contender, 16 inch barrel. I think we are talking pistols. It's a tack driver with reloads.

I'm so far behind I think I'm in first place.
