Fishfinder for kayak

Any suggestions for a simple fishinder for an ocean kayak trident angler? It does have a scupper hole for the tranducer and it comes with the mod pod. I don't need a color display and it will be used mostly to fish local lakes like Pinchot.

You can shoot through the hull too if you don't want to use the scupper. I use a cheapie eagle on my kayak. I run off 8 AA batteries. You can get the holder at radio shack for a couple bucks

What did you use to mount the tranducer and what type of inline fuse is that? I like how you used the jar.

Re: Fishfinder for kayak

It's clear silicon caulking

I don't remember where the fuse came from, can get them anywhere probably.

The peanut jar was temporary but i still use it.

There are some great kayak forums out there. Kayakfishingstuff is a good one. You can get lots of info and ideas there.

Was at Dicks tonight and saw that humminbird makes a setup just for kayaks. Over a quick glance it looks pretty nice and had everything you need.

Re: Fishfinder for kayak

I bought a humminbird PiranhaMax Portable fish finder for my kayak. It has a suction cup transducer. It can supposedly shoot through the bottom of the kayak, but I've only tried it attached to the outside so far and it seems to work pretty nicely. A lot of the reviews on it are that it doesn't find fish. I can vouch that it didn't pick up very many fish, but it showed me the contours of the bottom and any structure, which is what I bought it for. It comes with a rechargeable battery and a carrying case.
