leftover Yamaha 50 HP 2 stroke OR new 50 Merc?

The Yammy package is like $1,000 less. The Yamaha engine is a 2006 model and the Merc is a 2012. Both have power tilt and trim and the boat is going to be a 2012 model rated at 75 HP. I intend on keeping the boat at least 5 years. Anyone?

Happiness is a fine Mauser build.

You're going to get both sides of the fence.. This is like asking ford vs. chevy.. I'm assuming the '12 merc is a four stroke? You will get better performance out of a 2 vs a 4 stroke.. Personally I'm a huge fan of my four stroke (03 yamaha 90/65 jet).. I let it sit for 3 months, primed the bulb, and it fired right up with a turn of the key.. A friend of mine had a 50hp yamaha two stroke and ran the thing hard until he sold the boat recently (about 15 years old).. Do you receive a warranty with the Yamaha? That would be a huge deciding factor there.. Any motor could run forever, or crap out tomorrow..

I have the same 50 Yamaha since 07 and run it hard all year long fishing, crabbing and duck hunting. The motor is strong and has never let me down.

Re: leftover Yamaha 50 HP 2 stroke OR new 50 Merc?

here's just a very remote factor: even though the Yammy is "new" leftover, it's still considered 6 yrs older than the Merc. Down the road a few years this could come into play if trading it in, as the blue book will base it's start on the 2006 year. I've had one Merc ( 2 stroke) and two Yammys. Both brands are great, but I personally prefer the Yammy's.

I gotta go agitate the techies!

Good point about the warranty. I better ask about it.
