Buying a boat.

When buying a used boat not from a dealer what all do you have to do? Never bought a boat before. Thanks, Dustin

Re: Buying a boat.

same as buying a car in Pa if bought from a Pa registree , out of state boat and trailer just bring the title or if not a title state bring registration and Bill of Sale for Both boat and trailer . Make a tracing or take a clear digital picture of both Vin numbers for register in Pa . Pay tax on both and get a plate for the trailer .

Re: Buying a boat.

come buy my boat and I'll make it easy on ya by paying for all your transfer fees, and you'll get temps on everything and tow it home the same day.

I gotta go agitate the techies!

Re: Buying a boat.

At least find a boating friend, and have him look with you.

Boats like wives are all very different, so get one that meets or exceeds your needs and desires!

Re: Buying a boat.

Only ever owned four boats, but I have learned a little. If it has sat idle for more than one season. even if stored properly, you are going to sink some more money into it for it to run correctly. Funny things happen to idle boats. Bring a scratch awl or icepick with you when you look at it, poke the floors, transom, any funny looking spot. If it sinks in you have problems. If the seller denies you the icepick test, turn and run, he is hiding something ! Have the seller run the motor on earmuffs for 15 minutes at least. Look for signs of overheating, make sure the controls shift into forward and reverse and back without issues. Pull the dipstick, any sign of milky oil, turn and run. Thats a good start !
