Merc let me down today

My son and i had my boat in the water today for the first time this year, although i ran the motor in the yard with the hose a month ago,,anyway we dropped the boat in the potomac , when i started my 2006 60hp 4-stroke it idled kinda rough , didn't worry at first but when i took the trottle up i couldn't even get the boat to plane off.
Guess i have to dig my manual out.

Gas.

With the ethanol in the gas now, the ethanol causes problems. Number one issue with outboards.

They sell a treatment that you mix with your gas. It stabilizes the mixture and doesn't allow the varnishing that occurs. About $20 a bottle, but will last a season or two for most folks.

One of several products:

Stabil also has a product - make sure it is the blue color.

Is your position a short term gain - or a long term loss? Separate the issues.

Sounds like bad gas to me!

As Charles Barkley says, "I may be wrong, but I doubt it".

Could be water in the fuel, condensation ocurrs over winter and the emptier the tank the more condensation, now with ethanol fuel draws evenmore water into it. When it was in your yard the water was above the gasoline, when in the water and moving the fuel moves around and the pick up tube can pick up water. It is a good bet, that is what you have.

i agree with john
also did you look at your plugs ? i put a new set in on every boat i have had before it goes out first time.
check the simple things first before you start tearing into things...

Re: Merc let me down today

I'd not add the stabilizers, they are no good. If you want to add one over storage fine. But during the running season you will be OK if you are not keeping the whole tank for months.

Never ever use Dry gas or gum out in ethanol gass, it makes them worse. Running but a loss of power often is an engine running with one or more plugs fouled. Could even be water fouling as John said.

The easy cheap start is, drain the fuel and get fresh (no additives) then pull the spark plugs and clean/dry them.

If you are running portable gas tanks or have a vent valve, be sure it is open.

Eathnol is actually like running with 10% gum oout or dry gas, you will never have the old varnish; But if you are running in an older boat/gass tank, if will disolve the varnish in the tank and in the lines fast, and can then cause nore problems in the engine.

just my thoughts.

I was in the Potomac yesterday, west of Lookout point, 4-7 foot waves...wild wind and rain. You didn't miss anything if you were planning on boating/fishing there yesterday. Hope you were not pulling traps, dangerous.

Re: Merc let me down today

Just a second thought on my cheap first possible fix.

Change the fuel filter. It can be partially blocked so the engine will run in a tank or with 'ear muffs", but restricts fuel flow to less than half throttle. If you have this newer motor on an older tank/boat you might be getting tank tank 'crude' that the ethanol is removing fouling the filter. I change filter every year, with the poor gas you get water and a gray crude in those filters.

Re: Merc let me down today

Do you have an external fuel filter in line from the tank to the motor? If so Change it. Should be changed a few times a season, I always keep an extra on my boats. As far as fuel, if you have a fixed tank, you are better off keeping it almost full during winter storage as it will reduce condensation issues in your tank. I have been using Startron fuel treatment, for years and have not had any issues after storage. Ethanal is basically like a solvent, and if left for long periods, the water will separate. Good luck, and let us know what you find out. Here is a link with some more info.
