Boat and Trailer Title/Reg Question

I didn't want to steal the previous thread so I thought I would start another. I am a PA resident looking into buy a used boat from a person in NJ and wanted to know if there is anything I should look out for when I am transferring the boat title and registration and the trailer registration? The person says he has the all proper paper work for both boat and trailer. I did some research on my end but I am still a bit confused on what I need. I assume I can simple take the boat and trailer to a title agency to get everything handled but does the seller have to come with me or does he just sign the title over to me and provide me with a bill of sale? Never purchased a used boat before and not sure if it being out of state matters.

Re: Boat and Trailer Title/Reg Question

I bought a boat in Ohio a couple years ago, if I remember correctly I needed a bill of sale and some other type of form signed by them. I went to a local notary and she gave me all the info I would need along with the forms, I would check in advance with the notary you plan to use, mine went thru with no problems, good luck

Re: Boat and Trailer Title/Reg Question

be sure the Bill of sale shows the price you paid, they need that for the tax you will pay.

get separate B/S for the boat with ID# and a separate B/S for the trailer with the ID#. Boats are registered by a separate agency from the trailer (DMV). His old title (if NJ has titles) signed over to you is helpful. PA doesn't have titles per se for Baots.

Actually, you can now title a boat in PA.

Re: Boat and Trailer Title/Reg Question

That one almost nipped me in the butt...

Boats over a certain size (14 or 16?) are supposed to be titled and any smaller boat can be titled (to be titled forever then). At least this is what I was told.

Here is the wording:
-Any boat powered by an inboard motor that has a model year of 1997 or newer.
-Any boat powered by an outboard motor that is 14 feet or longer and has a model year of 1997 or newer.
-Any boat with a Pennsylvania title when purchased.
-Any boat used primarily in Pennsylvania even though it's titled in another state.

For every one mile of road there are two miles of ditch.
