Kayak or Jon Boat ..Help...Fishing

I have been riding the fence as to buy a Kayak or Jon Boat for me and my sons ages 13 and 16 and feel the Kayak and benefits of exercise and freedom out weigh the Jon boat( batteries and electronics and just the size)....as a jon would cost approx $1,300 or more and 3 Kayaks I could do at almost the same...but it would be their kayak to work on or add items....and take to College and such..

Ideas and opinions.. Fishing on lakes and stream..

My vote would go to the Kayak idea . Much more options for recreation on the water . Plus as you stated , they can take it with them where ever life may lead .

Kayaks are much more versatile and easier to transport. 3 quality kayaks are going to set you back more than the $1,300 you posted though

I have both. I say kayak and it's not even close. The only time my jon boat sees the water is when my buddy and I take it bowfishing. Other than that we don't even consider taking it since we both have kayaks.

Get a kayak made for fishing. They have some options on them that comes in handy when you are handling rods / nets / stuff. I had a straight recreational kayak and it was outstanding fun - until I caught fish and needed my hands for something besides the paddle. http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/fa...goryId=4414895

Transporting 3 kayaks could be tuff if you don't have a pickup or trailer.

Outfitting 3 kayaks would be expensive.

There are plenty of used wide 14' to 16' jon boats out there selling for a decent price and many are being sold fully equipped.

Re: Kayak or Jon Boat ..Help...Fishing

In a kayak you would sit and fish. They claim you can stand and fish from a kayak but I think that would be far too difficult to even attempt especially with a sit in model.

Personally I like old town kayaks and would go with a sit in not a sit on top. Are you looking for a river (size of river will play into size of kayak too) kayak or a lake kayak. If lake the longer the better for tracking, river can be shorter.
