ANF Business for Sale

I have an ongoing auto-search feature that alerts me to real estate for sale near the Allegheny National Forest. Today, this popped up:

http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/14779-...dsearch-address

It's not actually a camp, but I thought it might be a business opportunity for someone here on HPA who might be looking to make a permanent move to the mountains. Hope this helps someone follow the dream!

That's the old wighill store by the flying w ranch. That's changed hands a couple times.

Re: ANF Business for Sale

The present-day Whig Hill Store owners are absolutely clueless....never know when they'll be open and they don't fit in with the locals....they have managed to fail quickly...

I think the old Vowinkle hotel on 66 is for sale too.

I don't have ducks. I don't have rows. I have squirrels. And they're drunk.

Yes, it's the Whig Hill Store and yes, the Vowinckel Hotel is for sale (see rrroae's post). I didn't want to call it out since it wasn't named in the ad but I don't suppose it matters much.

I don't know anything about the current operators or how they do things, but maybe new ownership could turn things around.

Re: ANF Business for Sale

I'd love to own a store like that, but i don't see enough people up here anymore to roll those kind of dice. Not to mention the new PA tradition of hitting Walmart for supplies before heading to camp.

Only kind of place I would purchase would have to sell alcohol, good food and country atmosphere on the river. Need locals and regulars to survive here. IMO,
....tourism seems to just be keyword to get funding for stuff no one will go too.

Re: ANF Business for Sale

I'm familiar with all of them. The Whig hill store used to be a busy place but it was allowed to run way down. The new owners put a good bit of work into it but the traffic there is way down and I think a lot of those folks who are still around have just gotten too used to driving on by. I hate to say it but I'd bet on it's demise (again.)

The B&B on Jacks Hollow is in a very nice area but it's been for sale for over a year and, if I'm not mistaken, has seen a couple of price drops. It's a gorgeous looking place and I'd bet could be successful but it might take some time to get the momentum going. Jacks Hollow has some very nice properties and many of the places border on Cook Forest. (I have 2 acres there myself that'll be for sale soon)
I'd say thumbs down on the Whig hill store and a cautious thumbs up on the Jacks Hollow B&B. The Brass Lantern is not the Vowinckel Hotel which was for sale for some time but the signs have been down for a while now.

My bad! I was looking on my phone - and obviously not carefully enough.
