Happiness is.....

.....something hanging from the camp meat pole.

I don't have ducks. I don't have rows. I have squirrels. And they're drunk.

Re: Happiness is.....

Well, pretty simple. I sat in my tree stand all day, not seeing a thing. I found myself repeating the mantra, "It only takes a second to change your season" (Seriously, I kept saying it any time I'd start getting discouraged) Around 3PM and asked my Pap to send something, anything other than a chickadee past me to break up the monotony. At 3:15PM, I heard a shot down below me. I see this buck and a spike coming toward me. I could see the forks without the scope and when I put the scope on him I saw the brow tine. He hit an opening, I squeezed the trigger and he fell where I shot him. About a 35 yard shot. I had spined him. I climbed out of my stand and as I approached him, the kid (around 16 or 17) who shot at him walked up. He asked If I had shot the deer and I told him I had. The buck was still alive at this point so I finished it off. I asked the kid if he had been the one who shot and he said he was. I asked him if he thought he had hit it and he said he saw blood back where he had shot back in some pines. I could only see two shots in the deer and I had put them both in there. I followed the tracks back with the kid a good ways and there wasn't any blood. I checked the deer again, this time more closely and still only found 2 holes, both which were mine. I told him it was pretty apparent he had missed. I felt bad because if the kid had hit it anywhere at all, I would have gave it to him. He trudged off and came back with his dad and another guy as I was gutting it. I'm thinking, "here we go". Dad said he wanted to see if his kid had hit the deer at all and said his son told him there had been blood back where he shot. He was wondering if there was perhaps a non lethal shot in it. I told him there were two holes in it, explained how both holes got there and invited him to look for himself (I had tagged it at this point). I told the guy the same thing I told the kid, if he had even shot a dew claw off of it I would have given it to him. I asked the kid if he was sure he hadn't shot at the spike (Junior hunter) he said he didn't. Dad was satisfied at this point his son had missed. After they left and I began dragging the deer out, my Uncle cut the tracks of the spike and found a few drops of blood. We tried to holler at the guys but by this time they had walked off. Today as I was trying to push deer for my uncle, I found the tracks and did see blood. What it looks like is someone had hit the spike prior and the deer were standing when he shot so the spike was dripping blood. I followed the track up to where I shot the 5 point and to where the spike veered off and never saw any more blood. I think the spike was hit before it got to the kid and he mistook the blood for his hitting the 5 point. My uncle took up the track for a bit today just to see and he said it would only drip occasionally. I felt bad for the kid but he plain missed. Pap always had a sense of humor so along with the buck, he had to send some drama too. Not my biggest buck but not my smallest and I think it'll be tasty....
