Black flies in Tionesta

I've seen a few black flies at camp over the years and even read in the Forest Press a time or two about em but man! did we get hit by em at camp last night.
It was just at dusk and I just sat down on the porch with my barley pop and started to get bit by bugs that i had not identified at the time. It didn't take but a few minutes to make me close things up and run inside. Never took the time to identify what was chewing on me till I got in my truck this morning. There were about 20 of those little guys on the inside of my windsheild. The bites this morning confirmed it. Skeeter bites don't bother me and the no see ums and punkys don't either. These were black flies for sure! 40+ years of Canadian fishing trips over the years and I can only remember a time or two when they hit us that hard way up north. Had no problem Saturday or Sunday night but bad is the only way to describe em last night. Headed back tomorrow. Sure hope they're done with their little seige by then.

Re: Black flies in Tionesta

Over on the Marienville side of Forest county last week end didn't have that problem but the skeeters and deer flies were bad but that is what you deal with having woods all around even with the grass kept cut I guess! But even them seen to ease up once the summer heat takes over.

live laugh love and hunt hard!

Forest county got to love it!

That's pretty much my entire approach to the field of medicine, at least as far as self treatment goes.

Back sitting on the same front porch where the attack took place. Not worried though....treating with the alcohol before another attack as a precaution!

What proof of alcohol do you think works best? The 80 or 90 proof stuff. Hic.....

Re: Black flies in Tionesta

I'm a beer guy so instead of measuring my medicine by the proof, I do it by the can. I prescribe a can every 20-30 minutes untill they either stop biting or I stop noticing them. So far, I haven't noticed a single bug tonight!

Thanks for the outstanding medical advise. I can tell you got your health care training from the HPA medical staff. Alcohol; is there anything it can not do!?

Re: Black flies in Tionesta

We were there last Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. No black flies, the deer flies were around, but had a tick attached to me when I got home.
