A couple of my tent camps

Elk Co. in 2002 and 2003. This was the warmest tent I've made and slept in. It was cold there! A bear track around the one tent one morning and the tent site with the gate in background, a coyote walked within five feet of the door.

Neat! I have always wanted to do this in PA. Did it in Colorado, never in PA. The bear would have me sleeping with a loaded .270 beside me.

Re: A couple of my tent camps

Now that's a camp!! After working in the Rockies for 2 yrs. for the USFS, I kind a feel guilty about the heat, showers, tv, hot water, stove, etc. we have at our camp - nice sometimes, but not needed, and detracts from the experience in ways.

Were you on public land in these pix?? Camping permits needed?? Haul in wood, or cut dead stuff there?? I'm interested in trying this myself occasionally - saw a guy camping in a parking area in his truck a couple of weeks ago above our camp.

Re: A couple of my tent camps

This was in ANF near Ridgeway, at that time no permit needed. You should check, that may have changed. On State Forest you can only camp at designated sites and only with a free permit. You can gather wood for a camp in some places and other sites you must buy a permit to cut wood. State Forest Officers are against transporting firewood from out of the area. I do carry with me from home kindling which are scrap pine boards. Different areas will have local rules that different from the spot you may have camped in a week ago. There is nothing like having that first cup of coffee with a new fallen snow and it is so cold you nose doesn't run, it is frozen! Back inside where it is warm!

Re: A couple of my tent camps

Really cool! I would love to do that sometime!

On the permit stuff: There is no camping permit for the ANF. There are rules for dispersed camping, but no permits...things like 14 days max in one spot, cat hole toilets, etc. If you are camping in the ANF you can gather/cut anything dead and down to burn in the forest for campfires, stoves, cooking fires without issue. I just spent 20 minutes trying to find the information, but it seems they've changed there site and I can't find the info on dispersed camping anymore? they mention it, but don't provide the details. Give them a call or email for more info....they've always gotten back to me with email....even directed to the right people when necessary.

You really under estimated the ramifications of the boondoggle you have just perpetrated!
