Metal Roof

There has been more than a few threads here lately regarding metal roofing, but two questions I still have are first, my camp has two layers of shingles, do I remove or just cover? And my second concern, the roof has some moss on it, if I just cover it, how do I kill the moss prior to installing the metal roof to the point that I am comfortable that the moss does not regrow under the metal. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Unless you are the lead dog, the view is always the same...

Re: Metal Roof

Any roof we have put on we have typically removed the old roof. If you have moss growing on the current roof what is the sub roof like? I'd want to make sure I had a solid foundation if I was going through the effort of installing a roof that would last for decades to come. I'm not saying you can't leave the old roof but I always like taking the extra effort and making sure the job was done 100%. As far as killing the moss I've always used a mixture of clorox and water to kill anything like that growing on our place.

Re: Metal Roof

Remove the old roof. Make sure there is no other rot like Bearklr said. Then put the new metal on top. If you are going to go over top of shingles you must fir up with 1X material.

Re: Metal Roof

tear it off. 2 layers + metal and furring is a lot of weight. add a couple feet of snow and you could have big problems. this way you can also see what the deck is like and make repairs if needed. its more work but could save some headaches. just do it and get it over with.

Re: Metal Roof

Spend a couple of bucks and get a shovel made for removing shingles, will cut the removal job in half. the cleanup will be more of a pain.

Re: Metal Roof

i dont know where your camp is but see if you can use the bagster. shovel off through shinges in there and call to have it pick up. depending on how big and complicated your roof is you could have it done in 2 days with some friend help. i did a 1 story 20x30 camp tear off and metal roofing in 2 days with me and 1 helper. of check with a local contractor and see what the price is that way you can sit and drink lemonaid and watch it get done.
