Timber Rattler changed my plans

I was up at camp over the weekend and was hiking a trail that I've walked on hundreds of times over the years. I was on a trail near Oleona, southern Potter, and noticed a black pile of something in the path that was grown up with those ferns. At first glance I just thought it was a large pile of bear dung, but the closer I got I realized it was a large rattlesnake after I saw its head. The body on the snake was really thick, much larger than I would have expected. I've been walking Potter County hills for over 50 years now, and thats the first I've ever encounterd a rattlesnake in Potter county even though I knew they were around. I just stopped in my tracks and did a 180 and found a better trail that was not not as overgrown...I'm assumming it was a Timber Rattler.

My wife and I ran into 3 rattle snakes two weeks ago biking and hiking. The heat really has them out.

I haven`t seen even 1 snake in elk county near hallton in 2 years since buying our camp. I don`t know if that is good or bad though.

Re: Timber Rattler changed my plans

I have seen more rattler snakes around camp in the last 3 years then I saw the preceding 14 years combined.
Not sure why but the only thing that changed was the gas well drilling. I think a lot of snakes are looking for new dens, some dens were destroyed by the construction of well pads, others are moving due to ground vibration created by the drilling.
Just saying, have no proof.

The way that you wander is the way that you choose,
The day that you tarry is the day that you lose.

I have been sticking to dirt roads and well worn paths, so if I step off them I will really keep my eyes open for sure!! Thanks Brian.
