Deer in warm weather

Okay, so I never killed a deer in "warm weather", and I will be archery hunting this fall with a cross-bow. Don't beat up on me for using a cross-bow, as I am a handicapped gimp. My camp is located between Renovo and Cross Fork. What if I shoot one one the first day I'm there? I'm used to hanging deer in cold weather, and the only deer I ever harvested with a bow was close to home. Got it processed right away. Suggestions?

Re: Deer in warm weather

If you have a refrigerator at your camp debone the meat and put it in there til you go home. If you have a big enough cooler get some ice and quarter the deer and stick it in there so when you get home you can give the deer to your processor or do it yourself.

Re: Deer in warm weather

Get a big plastic bin. A 54 gal. one made by rubbermaid should work. Home Depot or Lowes has them. Field dress your deer and get it pack in ice asap. Leave for home and your butcher asap and you'll be ok.

Good luck.

Re: Deer in warm weather

Do what we do, we found a butcher in the area we hunt. He cuts it up, wraps and freezes it for us and we pick it up before we head home.

Re: Deer in warm weather

In Georgia's hot weather it was a day's exercise. it was to gut the deer in the woods, as soon as harvested. Keep it in the shade when dragging the deer out of the woods. (If over a half hour)
Get it under cover, out of the sun, in the vehicle, and a bag of ice in the gutted section wouldn't hurt, if transporting it.
At your butchering location, as soon as you arrive, get it ready for skinning. After shinning, cut the deer into four body sections and butcher on a table.
Put most of the meat in the freezer and a couple of pieces in the refrigerator that day.

If you use a commercial butcher, make sure you know the hours they are open, before going hunting.

And I never had any spoiled meat, using my procedure.
You tend to sleep real good at night. And non hunting exercise always paid off.

Re: Deer in warm weather

When we're at the cabin, We hang the deer & pack the cavity with ice. Should be good for a day or 2 til you head home.
Or quarter it & put in cooler as aready stated.

Re: Deer in warm weather

This is off-topic, but you don't need to apologize to anyone for using a crossbow. Regardless of peoples personal opinions, they are a legal weapon to use in archery season. Enjoy it.

Like the others have said, finding a butcher in your hunting area is a great idea. Other than that, cutting your deer into 6 pieces is easy it will all fit in most coolers. Skin it and than halve it. Taking each front quarter off is easy with just a knife. Then seperate the hindquarters from the rib cage with a meat saw. Everything else can wait till you get home. Good luck

If you're having trouble hunting for deer,
don't wish things were easier;
wish you were smarter.
