We have a camp between Wellsborough and Westfield in Tioga County. Looking to purchase Insulation and paneling. Any advise on building supply stores would be appreciated. Thanks Hopper

Re: Building Supplies

I beleive there is a Lowes in Mansfield, just outside of town. There is also a small lumber yard in town. I am sure Wellsboro has a lumber yard, but I don't know what its called.

there was one just outside Elkland when I lived in the area nearly twenty years ago. That should be close.

Re: Building Supplies

Hop there is a lumber yard and hardware store called County line lumber. I think they sell insulation and panelling there. Sits near Gaines on the Potter/Tioga Border on rt 6

Re: Building Supplies

I dont know the area but I will tell you from experience: Shop around if you have that option because prices vary, sometimes widely, from place to place.

Re: Building Supplies

Wilson Supply is about 60 yds off of Rt 6 coming into Wellsboro from Mansfield. Turn left by the old Borden plant. Hampson 's Agway will be on your right and the left turn will be a little less than 1/4 of a mile Very good prices

Re: Building Supplies

That close to Gaines, County Line is probably your best bet, if you don't want to haul stuff a long way? Niles Lumber on 362 east of Wellsboro, was there for a long time, but they've closed up.

The new Lowes is south of Mansfield on old Rt. 15.

Morgan/Margraft is still just outside of Elkland, last I knew? Been 30 years since I went down there for anything? The big home center west of Elkland on Rt. 49, closed some years ago. I bought lumber there when they were still open.

Lowes may have the best prices. Depends on how far ya wanta go out of your way on the way to camp, to get materials?

Although, if you go up 15, pick up things at Lowes and head west on Rt. 6 or 660 to get back over towards Gaines, you won't have lost much time?

Re: Building Supplies

You could always call some of these places ahead of time and get prices. I'd be glad to get phone numbers if you want

Re: Building Supplies

Here's a "funny" one: Years ago, when we were building the addition onto our camp, I had the majority of the material hauled to Tioga Co. by Moore's in Camp Hill. I had long had an account with them, so one of the contractors' reps drove the truckload up there for me, at no extra cost for his time (salary, plus commission for him). I just had to pay for the mileage on the truck, in addition to the "normal" delivery charge.

When it came time to build some bunks and other finishing touches, I went down to Westfield to buy several sheets of OSB. The price per sheet was almost $2 less, than the same material I had bought from Moore's. The SPF 2x4s were about the same price. So why haul stuff 180 miles, if it can be bought for about the same price, locally?

Sometimes it pays to check local prices, before assuming that the local supplier will charge alot more than the big outfits in the city?
