Quehanna Wild Area

Can you camp out just any old place. The reason I am asking is because historically my families camp from the 40's and 50's was located in the area that the Curtis Wright company bought out and they were forced to move their camp elsewhere.
Last summer we found the actual found the foundations where the two camps my family owned sat side by side and thought it would be interesting to camp there a weekend. Does anyone have any insight on this, its not far from a road but it is not a designated camping area.

Re: Quehanna Wild Area

The general answer is yes with some restrictions as far as distance from a road, waterway, etc. But the bigger question is whether a free permit is needed, if more than one night in the same spot or with support from a vehicle the answer is a permit is needed.

There are 2 categories of overnight camping, primitive which is no support from a vehicle and if only staying a single night in each spot no permit needed. Other category is motorized near a vehicle/road and this always requires a permit.

Also check on the specifics as far as distances from things for each type.

In general:
State Gamelands, no overnight
State Parks, overnight in campgrounds
State Forest, overnight allowed with restrictions and permit may be needed
