Rules to deer camp membership

My friends deer camp require the following towards membership:

1) At least five (5) work parties attendance.
2) Hunt with members three (3) opening days of deer season.
3) Must be voted by all members. If one member veto prospective member. They are blackballed from membership.
4) Initiation fee ($500) must be paid in first two (2) years.
5) Penalty ($75) for missing any work parties w/o proper excuse. Person can make up by performing work at cabin assigned by treasurer/secretary that needs to be done.
6) All members pay yearly dues and any assessments for contracted work at cabin.

Re: Rules to deer camp membership

Seems a little overkill to me? Whatever happened to a guy who owns a camp just inviting his buddies up for hunting season to enjoy their presence? Sounds more like an exclusive hunting club than a deer camp to me.....

Re: Rules to deer camp membership

3 years of opening day of deer season? Can't imagine how it takes 3 years to figure out if the guy fits in or not I can hunt with somebody for a couple hours and figure them out.As a possible prospective member can't imagine maybe wasting 3 opening days and maybe not making the cut. Good luck with memberships
sounds like a fun group of guys.

Re: Rules to deer camp membership

How many members are there? At one time 25 now down to 15 and some can't hunt due to medical condition. New blood 3 young guys with a 4th in the Air Force presently.

Sounds more like an exclusive hunting club than a deer camp to me.. I agree. That is how they run it.

3 years of opening day of deer season? Can't imagine how it takes 3 years to figure out if the guy fits in or not. Again I agree. A certain person actually runs the camp and the other members are like sheep and agree with him. He amends by-laws to suit his personal whims.

The above person has had friends join and then quit but I have seen other members bring their friends to camp and find that they end up disgruntled with obstacles placed by said person. He acts like it is his personal camp and has used it year round to entertain family and friends and let members pay bills like propane fill-ups. They do have a donation jar on the table. Most members only use the cabin for deer hunting and are gone after first two or three days.

State forest lease camp. This is also a State Forest lease camp that is totally rustic (meaning outhouse and no running water inside building).

Re: Rules to deer camp membership

Wow.... Things like this make me glad I purchased my own place. I just like to hunt, I wouldn't want the added stress of politics and rules interfering with that.I could see if the camp had exclusive rights to hundreds of acres of private land then that might make it more appealing. But forjust a place to eat and sleep in the state forest? No thanks... I can see why membership has dropped.

Re: Rules to deer camp membership

Definitely some overkill in my opinion with rules at a Camp from what I have read.
Our main rule at Camp is no loaded firearms in Camp.
Most of our bi laws center around financial responsibilities
concerning dues.
If a guy wants to stay up and drink and not make it to hunt that's on him as long as behavior does not get out of line.
If ya want to share your meat fine, but not mandatory.
All our members are die hard hunters and fisherman.
All good guys and we have no conflicts.
There was a similar topic on this site some time ago.
One camp owner stated when alcohol is being consumed he would lock up all the firearms and only he had a key.
If I thought it was necessary to do that at camp because I'm worried about an individual he would't be there in the first place.
It's supposed to be a fun atmosphere not a prison camp.
Just my 2 cents.
