We had our annual pre-rifle season meeting last night . Out of 18 members there are only 11 headed up state to deer camp .Some of the older members (70s) are just not enthused since deer populations have decreased along the northern tier counties , making for some long days afield . Have you folks seen a decrease in attendees over the last few years at your respective camps ?
Enjoy each day afield as if it were your last.....take the time to take it all in !
Our closest friends have a cabin in Cameron county. Very few residents but alot of camps. Buddy said during bear season about half the camps are open. Deer season? Almost none. Ironically the deer population up there is alot better than it is around his house here.
When we went into the local gun club there the waitress told us 20 years ago it became like a big city there with all the guys at the camps.
2017-Working on the house has replaced hunting and fishing
Here in bald eagle, tiaghdaton state forests along rt 80 the state forest lease camps are definitely down, fortunately we are up and doing strong!! No where's near the guys hunting and or social visits at night!
Anybody can shoot deer on the farm ground....You earn it in the mountains.......
My camp is in Sproul. Twenty five years ago when we bought the place, we would have 8-9 guys for the deer rifle opener. Down to three hunters this year. And, we now skip Monday, and arrive Wed of the first week.
Reasons: lack of interest, lack of vacation time, moved out of the area, death. Hopefully we find some new interest.
We always squeezed 14 into camp in the 80's and 90's. And we had guys on a "waiting list". No one is planning to hunt rifle season for deer this year. There is a slim chance that I may go by myself if I see any deer in the woods during my 4 days hunting bear. There's also a slim chance of that.
